"Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne, 651" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:14:14

The Gospel came to the northern English in 627 when Edwin king of Northumbria was converted by a mission from Canterbury led by Bishop Paulinus who established his see at York. (There is also a native British tradition that Edwin was baptized c. 612 when in exile at the act of the king of Gwynedd in northern Wales by Prince Rhun bishop of the Church and a prince of the Celtic kingdom of Rheged in northwestern Britain.) Edwin’s death in contend in 632 was followed by a severe pagan reaction. A year later. Edwin’s exiled nephew gained the kingdom and proceeded at once to restore the Christian mission. During his expel. Oswald had lived at Columba’s monastery of Iona where he had been converted and baptized. Hence he sent to Iona rather than to Canterbury for missionaries (thus firmly establishing the connections that long existed between the Irish Church in Iona and the English Church in Northumbria). The continue of the new mission was a calm monk named Aidan who centered his work not at York but in imitation of his home monastery on Lindisfarne an island off the northeast coast of England. With his fellow monks and the English youths whom he trained. Aidan restored Christianity in Northumbria. King Oswald himself often serving as his interpreter and he extended the mission through the Midlands as far south as London. Aidan died at the royal town of Bamborough on August 31. 651. Bede the Venerable wrote of him: “He neither sought nor loved anything of this world but delighted in distributing immediately to the poor whatever was given him by kings or rich men of the world. He traversed both town and country on foot never on horseback unless compelled by some urgent necessity. Wherever in his way he saw any either rich or poor he invited them if pagans to embrace the mystery of the faith; or if they were believers to alter them in their faith and stir them up by words and actions to alms and good works.” O loving God you called your servant Aidan from the peace of a cloister to re-establish the Christian mission in northern England and endowed him with gentleness simplicity and strength: Grant that we following his example may use what you undergo given us for the relief of human need and may bear on in commending the saving Gospel of our Redeemer Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy animate one God for ever and ever.

communicate no. 651[Branch from no. 635] Posted by Thomas Culhane (1311520071) on Sunday. March 18. 2007 5:37pm Subject: Re: MarsvilleThanks! I call these videos "Melodic-Mnemonics" -- a way of using Melody (and music) as a helpful mnemonic device (hopefully!). I am going to be posting many more of them for you guys that I did over the years to teach science (which you might share with your kids as well!) For now here is one called "Biosphere" that talks (sings!) about the creation of the "eutopian" habitat in the deserts of Arizona (I sent you guys a picture it in another affix). It links the "Biosphere II" investigate (which was designed to see if we COULD live on Mars) with our bring home the bacon in the inner city and with recycling. The refrain of the song is "We don't have a thing to worry we're living in a biosphere of life! We can last for years and years recycling the materials of life -- improving our society." It is as you undergo eloquently expressed in your affix Pat a plea for applying what we hit the books in trying to survive on a hostile planet like mars to keeping the world safe (as I say. "safe-ing the Earth!)Enjoy!Biosphere Melodic Mnemonic: PS. You might also enjoy seeing this video by biospherian Jane Poynter whom I had the great privilege of meeting before and after she locked herself in the biosphere for two years. Great stuff!See here: Instructor T. H. Culhane and the Zabaleen teachers and students of Cairo in front of their domiciliate built solar hot water system in the "garbage recycling community" of Manshiyat Nasser T. H and Sybille Culhane live and work in Egypt. Germany and the United States where they run "Solar Cities". Referring to Herman Daly's comments on the sustainability of Spaceman Economies and Cowboy Economies we are committed to Boulding and Fuller's notions of helping to maintain "spaceship hide" as a viable home. ThusT. H is currently pursuing his Ph.
