LONDON - Making History: Antiquaries in Britain. 1707 – 2007 explores the work and achievement of the Society of Antiquaries of London over the past three hundred years since its foundation in the early eighteenth century to the show day. The exhibition consists of 190 works and showcases for the first time treasures from Britain’s oldest Learned Society concerned with the study of the past. On exhibition through 2 December. 2007. It features unique works of art antiquities and manuscripts of national historical importance from one of the oldest museum collections in this country including a Yorkist processional cross recovered from the battlefield of Bosworth (1485) the list of Henry VIII’s possessions at the time of his death and an early write of Magna Carta. Also on show are paintings of ancient sites and landscapes by Constable. Turner. Blake and an extraordinary collection of English royal portraits from Henry VI to Mary Tudor. In addition there are the only surviving visual records of objects long since lost or destroyed. Making History: Antiquaries in Britain. 1707 – 2007 explores key stages in the creation of Britain’s historical narrative from the earliest archaeological discoveries of the early modern age to the rise of professional historians and archaeologists in the 20th century and insights into how we might study the past in the future. The exhibition culminates with a special study of Stonehenge arguably Britain's best known monument. It reveals how our understanding of its history keeps on changing thanks to the affect of research and to new discoveries such as a recently unearthed late medieval drawing of the megaliths never before seen in this country. The exhibition’s guest curator the celebrated historian Dr David Starkey FSA says. “For me history has always been as much about things – buildings paintings jewels – as written documents. So this Exhibition won’t simply be a display of the Society’s treasures – wonderful though they are – it’s also an opportunity to show how history is made and why it matters”. The Society of Antiquaries of London was founded in 1707 following a meeting of three likeminded individuals; Humphrey Wanley. John Bagford and John Talman at the feature Tavern in the Strand. Their agreed aim was to advance the study of British history prior to the reign of James I. In 1751 the Society received its Royal Charter from George II and was charged with 'the encouragement advancement and furtherance of the chew over and knowledge of the antiquities and history of this and other countries'. Since its foundation the Society has been at the forefront of research in archaeology and the study of the historic sites monuments and artefacts of Britain. This will be his first retrospective in England since the exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1983. Born in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz. Saxony. Georg Baselitz has been acclaimed as one of Germany’s most prolific and well-known artists. He is perhaps best known for painting his motifs upside down as a strategy to free the affect matter from its content. We are doing a shoot over at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco this week. The Academy is undergoing a $500 million renovation at the moment and the scene is amazing. Basically a small city has blossomed to take on the communicate. Renzo Piano is the architect of what is going to be one of the largest color buildings of its kind. LONDON - Impressionists by the Sea celebrates 19th century representations of the northern coastline of France. By the 1860s stylish holidaymakers began to appear in paintings as many of the resorts in the area such as Deauville and Trouville became fashionable. The exhibition concentrates on those works that show the land itself - the meeting of arrive and sea; it is this that reveals most clearly the painters’ approaches to the furnish - both to the uses of the beach for work and pleasure and to the natural forces that shaped the coastline. Against a background of late Romantic views by Eugène Isabey and Paul Huet together with austere realist representations by Gustave Courbet. Impressionists by the Sea reveals the respective origins of the fashionable contemporary beach scene from the early 1860s to the early 1870s. In addition a small assort of more conventional representations of land scenes by artists such as Whistler and Cazin have been selected to provide the context within which the Impressionists’ pictorial innovations were received. These works of art created for acceptance by the official Salon are powerful examples of the popularly acclaimed treatment of this affect. The differentiate with the Impressionists highlights the distinctive qualities of these artists’ experiments as they appeared to their contemporaries.
