"Academy to Open Film Museum in 2012" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:04:05

Posted Nov 8th 2007 5:32PM by Filed under: . In New York we have. I just assumed there was a similar kind of museum on the west coast but I anticipate in all these years Hollywood never established something so obvious. Now though the Academy of communicate conceive of Arts and Sciences has finally announced a plan to build a museum dedicated to cinema or at least cinema through the eyes of the Oscars. Apparently it ordain be called The Academy Museum and is set to be open in 2012 three years after construction begins in 2009. So far the intend has no plans or calculate but the Academy has hired French architect best known probably for designing Paris' "Cite de la Musique (City of Music)" and NYC's LVMH Tower. The site for the museum has been chosen as a two-block eight-acre plot near the Kodak Theater (home of the Academy Awards show) in Hollywood which will accept the building to face the famous Hollywood sign. the museum is being planned as the world's largest and most ambitious of its kind. The inform also has an interesting ingeminate from de Portzamparc who claims he's the ameliorate choice because he has "a true passion for cinema and often cerebrate this art to architecture: the art of motion art of light editing sequencing of the measure and the life celebration of the living." there's another great quote from Academy president Sid Ganis who wants the museum to be a "monument to the art of film." He told the newswire: "I want people to understand how film relates to the world around us how storytelling in the film comprehend is accomplished and how through film we move ahead in our lives to some degree. I wish that's not too highfalutin' but that's what I'm hoping for." We'll undergo to wait and see if the museum is more dedicated to the history of film in all its glory or more dedicated to the history of the Oscars and the glory it thrusts upon specific films and branches of cinematic technique. I couldn't compassionate less about Forrest Gump or Crash or other Oscar travesties so I commune that the Academy museum is about overall enter rather than the Oscars. But it'll be nice to finally go to Hollywood and see/do something actually related to enter. Please act your comments relevant to this communicate entry. "What makes a machinima film ?good??" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:33:55

I am sure it has been discussed before but there are certainly a lot of different answers to the challenge what makes specifically a machinima film “good.” This is yet another go. For the sake of the argument let’s not displace approve and simply say that machinima - like every other form of art - is simply too diverse to even communicate about the issue. It so happens that there are more and more machinima film festivals and when judging films - what are the criteria to apply? Can you simply put a machinima film next to a classic animation and use the same idea of “good”? Is there some quality that is more specific to machinima and can only be achieved in that change? So the question might also be: what makes a machinima “better” than traditional animation techniques? In the beginning … machinima pieces were recordings of in-game performances. Machinima as tools for clan strategies and bragging movies are far from dead as the success of be. This machinima comes from the game and is made solely for the sake of gaming. Watching a Doom God at bring home the bacon can be a thing of beauty and has its own determine. Here the determine of machinima is the fact that this game can only be properly presented and re-created in the form of a demo recording. The virtual performance in the game is so extraordinarily good that it is worth an own documentary. Bungie praised the Halo 3 recording features focusing on that inform. “preserve your beat stunts in-game and affect your friends.” All very good for watching Song Byung-Goo. “Stork” in StarCraft or for Brandt’s ; but watching an average player or a repetitive series of stunts in Matrix style for more than a minute? Not that this create of machinima has no determine. Its determine is that of the home video made for you and your friends. Good for the producer and his/her friends - not good for anybody else. Yet sometimes the game parts are so well presented that the enter can become a representation of a bigger air related to the game world. Play itself is a cultural activity and playing Halo on an expert level might reach the same status of aesthetic pleasure we get from watching a basketball feature act a slam immerse. That is when a machinima about the physics in Halo (desire furnish’ ) can be so pure and game-focused that it tells something about the game and beyond. Likewise. BlackShark’s is a good example of how the bet can celebrate itself in ways that are amazing beautiful - “good.” If machinima reaches out to larger audiences then an audience of five buddies enjoying their clan’s recorded win over another aggroup cannot be the ultimate decide. One can question whether this “reaching out” is really necessary. Maybe machinima can and should be in its niche but the fact is that a lot of machinima certainly tries to reach new audiences beyond the hardcore gamer. Machinima films try to shine in the traditional domains of cinema such as editing design directing cinematography sound - see Ricky Grove’s post on as a good example. In that case machinima knocks on the door of traditional film productions and competes with their standards. If one wants to analyse the piece’s quality you only have to check the categories of the. Our very own Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences plays with that compose and copies a lot of the award categories in the idea of the Mackie. The outcome then is a traditional film as Paul suggests on machinima org : This is what seems to be the standard for the machinima film festivals at the moment. Machinima is seen as a fast and inexpensive way to make traditional movies. Nothing against that in principle but are crucial areas such as editing directing and cinematography really the inherent strong points in machinima? All of these are pretty difficult beasts to handle even for the most experienced machinima producer. They are already difficult in real film productions but adding the extra contend of a buggy game engine certainly does not help. That is why new tools are so important. But there is also another caveat here. If comparison with commercial enter production or change surface the independent film industry is the ultimate standard then we have to embrace the commercial side of machinima more. Raising the bar in writing acting directing - all the typical allocate categories - is definitely a great idea. The only problem is: if one concentrates on these categories alone the result would be a good traditional film in the beat possible inspect. The fact that this film is made using machinima techniques would be a mere technological align say. Art-speak? Indeed. But a machinima desire re-interprets existing art and art practices through machinima. Only live machinima can deliver Condon’s interpretation no Pixar or Disney studio can create the cause in their next blockbuster. Such a pure come combined with the necessary artistic accent seems to offer another quality of machinima as it somehow re-frames the existing art practice. so what ?Breaking machinima down into three categories is plain cheating. Most “good” machinima pieces undergo a bit of everything but as machinima is moving into the world of commercial enter and TV production I suggest it makes sense to act in mind that there are quality criteria of machinima that are unique do not aim at inexpensive and faster traditional film production circles and should see more attention when we try to end what makes a “good” machinima. I obviously desire tons of important points and details. That’s why I would love to comprehend what others evaluate so if you have really construe this far gratify displace an opinionated line below. I think your three category treatment of machinima is an excellent way to discuss the idea of a “good” machinima film. Of course you end up branching into many other topics and ideas so the three categories you go up with are really just launching points to imagine/debate/address with yourself (and us) what I think is the core of your post: what makes machinima unique? This is a bedrock question that those of us who are inclined to try to make works of art out of our machinima films are going to have to answerif we want to make films that aren’t simply copies of TV shows hit Hollywood films or other popular machinima. Almost two years ago I wrote a longish post at mprem in which I attempted to act with the some of the same questions; why use traditional film models for your machinima films? What specifically does machinima do that a traditional animation or live challenge film does not? As you point out machinima filmmakers trying to re-create traditional filmmaking have to hit the books and know the tools that allow you to act films desire this but then as you evince why make machinima films desire this? Why not just simply make a live action film? Or a traditional animated film? Surely it can’t be because it’s cheaper and faster? You and I are very much of the same object when you consider the idea of machinima as a unique movie-making tool that can create art in a way that no other medium can. This is the area where machinima will have some kind of impact on other artists. No films like these (Kirschner’s jaunt. Person 2184) will not be a part of the media marketplace like RvB but will be influential in another more important way: they ordain inspire and provoke other filmmakers.

"Censorship sucks." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 18:20:38

No matter what it censors. Religious groups have to understand that the cerebrate we put up with their nonsense is a free and democratic society. If they wish to criminalise anti-religious messages plays cartoons etc. They ordain undergo no grounds for complaint when others label for their more contentious messages to be censored. It seems however some religous commentators are getting wise to it. Comedian Kathy Griffin won a creative-arts Emmy measure weekend for her reality show. "My Life on the D-List." In her acceptance speech. Griffin made religious remarks that were described as "vulgar in your-face brand of dislike speech," by account Donohue president of the anti-defamation Catholic unify. Griffin said. "A lot of populate come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus." According to CNN com she went on to direct up her Emmy make an off-color remark about Jesus and entitle. "This allocate is my god now!"The award show is scheduled to air on E! channel tonight. In a statement Monday the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said. "Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks ordain not be part of the E! telecast." Her speech will be abbreviated and some of the language ordain be bleeped out. Many would argue that Griffin's raucous remarks no matter how offensive are protected by the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution and should not be restricted. The right to free speech is a principle that Americans fiercely defend but as many celebrities are quickly learning personal rights must be balanced with public responsibility. The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:12. "All things are lawful unto me but all things are not expedient."Griffin's remarks may have been acceptable and perhaps change surface funny if they had not ventured into the realm of defamation. But while editing out the lewd portions of Griffin's speech is necessary for the public airwaves additional censorship of her comments may undergo far-reaching consequences for people of faith. Suppressing secular or anti-religious commentary will set a precedent that could be used to circumscribe religious circumscribe.

'Suck it. Muhammad,' there would undergo been a very different reaction," Catholic unify president account Donohue said in a statement posted on the group's Web site. He called on TV academy president Dick Askin to criticise Griffin's "hate speech" and on Griffin to defend. So the religious folk can get a lot of airtime railing about the blasphemy. The cable news shows undergo an easy-to-grasp controversy to do many segments about (always with the replay of the video -- desire ). Anybody who has any chance of liking Kathy Griffin gets to see some funny material to express emotion about -- and I convey both Griffin's routine and the fulminating religionists. And Griffin -- the biggest winner -- gets mega-publicity and a rich gold exploit of material to use on her "D-List" show and in many future stand-up routines. And sensible onlookers get the chance to make the sensible observation that Griffin was obviously making fun of the celebrities who are silly and self-absorbed enough to talk as if Jesus puts his energies into rigging the Hollywood awards. ADDED: I forgot to have in mind all the bloggers and communicate commenters who get to say she wouldn't act say that about Muhammad etc. etc. Which gives me the chance to say:1. Hollywood celebrities never convey Muhammad when they win an allocate.2. Christians should feel good that people think Jesus can take a joke.(And I know "suck it" is rude but it is exactly the opposite of "convey you.") "Griffin was obviously making fun of the celebrities who are silly and self-absorbed enough to communicate as if Jesus puts his energies into rigging the Hollywood awards"So by saying "drink it. Jesus" she was hoping to anger the celebrities in the category you mention above? "I hope I offended some populate. I didn't be to win the Emmy for nothing."I evaluate that is a stretch-- perhaps you are attributing to her the motives you would undergo had if you had said "drink it. Jesus?" I evaluate she was hoping to anger religious people. In fact. I think that is what is obvious rather than what you said was. Did she convey Seinfeld? Her show is the same thing that she did on her guest appearance a while back though maybe with a little less "I dislike Jerry". She's not funny. She became semi-famous in a not funny show Suddenly Susan. Vicki Lewis was the much funnier redhead of that era from the much funnier show Newsradio. So in that consider I think she's alter not thanking Jesus. It's good touch for Jesus really. It's bad to be branded with bad material. If Jesus was involved it'd be funny. So. I evaluate it's just a little silly to care too much. Jesus himself decided not to respond when he was being insulted. He took it in walk and made an even bigger show out if it. She wanted attention and she got it. Hey! Kathy Griffin has a show! Good use of media manipulation. I ordain freely adjudge to being a life-long Lutheran and i did have a born again undergo in the late 70s. Moreso. I have spent a good deal of my life in church charity work helping out and whatnot. I think I'm a fairly good Christian. not great but ok... say mainstream.. so those are my bona fides. I evaluate she is extremely funny. I take no offense at the remarks because there was no offense intended. The mere concept that God/Christ/Holy Spirit has anything to do with an Academy presentation.. well thats pretty much making God mundane and innaneMeteors hitting earth and killing all life off... ok.. maybe God got pissed off winning a TV allocate.. ennnnn not so much. Laugh a little ok. When Imus was on the air and Bernard McGurk did "the Cardinal" in a Fed-x mailer hat bejeeezus some of the cram was was screamingly funny and all of it was horribly not PC and the catholics of the world would have/should have drawn swords and stormed the studio... but it was done not that way. Why can't we get approve to "not that way" and just change the bring if you don't like. Jesus. Who in the world would mind about being assailed by William Donohue of the Catholic unify? If he and his do work assort amounted to anything more than a momentary albeit public gnashing of teeth wouldn't Madonna be languishing in obscurity today? And Martin Scorsese? Among others?approve when I worked at Billboard the editorial cater would gather in my apartment to watch the Billboard Awards broadcast. We'd keep a running tally of how many times winners thanked God versus how many times they thanked Billboard. The numbers tended to be about change surface making us even more convinced that we were vastly underpaid. Griffin -- whose show I've never watched and whose stand-up I've never considered to be all that brilliant -- went over the line for a lot of people when she said "drink it. Jesus." (And going over the line is something that stand-up comics pretty much just do so being shocked by one suggests that maybe you shouldn't check stand-up comics.) Griffin's inform was obviously a criticism of the empty religiosity of many of her fellow performers not "Satan is King."As the ever-clever Butch Walker put it in "A Song Without A Chorus":"The rappers do drive-bys/And consume crack and convey the Lord/While us white-bread singer songwriters/Just stand around looking bored. ." Just to be clear she describes herself as a "militant atheist". Also when someone thanks Jesus in a award/victory moment. I evaluate its intellectually lazy and religiously ingnorant to anticipate its always or mostly because they are glad he rigged the game for them. There's the slightest chance they are thanking him for things like alter peace salvation. (for those who understand alter in the blanks). As my kids tell me all the time after a 1000 times its no longer funny. I think I heard a guy at the Funny hit the books in 1986 alter a joke desire that. First time I heard it. I cut off my dinosaur. Prof ALooks like you’ve decided to put down all commenters who don’t evaluate that poor comprehend against Christian symbols comes under comedic authorise. I understand the joke. I really do. & I think it funny as a concept: Jesus does not micro-manage. But why “suck it Jesus”? Ah you undergo decreed that while you “experience ‘suck it’ is rude” gee golly. “it is exactly the opposite of ‘thank you.’ ” Exactly. Guess I don’t have your thesaurus. And I query what you’d say to a student who said in categorise. “suck it. Ann”?Funny how comics always experience who to bruise with impunity. As Bill Donahue noted. Mel Gibson. Michael Richards. Isaiah Washington. Imus. & Jerry Lewis all had to eat some crow for their attacks on religion ethnicity.

"Suck it, Academy of Television Arts and Sciences" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 15:52:51

"A lot of populate come up here and convey Jesus for this award. I want you to experience that no one had less to do with this allocate than Jesus. Suck it. Jesus! This allocate is my god now." And yesterday the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that Griffin's remarks would be cut from the pre-recorded air of the show. And do you know why? Because in an unprecedented (and surely unintentional) display of irony that comedians such as Griffin surely must acknowledge the misnamed Catholic unify for Religious and Civil Rights demanded it. Kathy Griffin is a comedian. And comedians lest the ATAS which rewards them does not realize make money for themselves and for television networks and for Emmy awards shows by saying provocative things in ways they consider to be humorous. And humor is subjective. I don't evaluate Kathy Griffin is particularly funny; I sight her rather grating. But she is an American born with the right to say whatever she wants about Jesus or Mohammed or Allah or you or me. (Of course she could arguably be convicted of slandering or libeling you or me if she said just the right thing but I'm pretty sure Jesus won't be filing a asperse claim against Griffin anytime soon. Anyway in this case he'd lose.) The Catholic unify has classified Griffin's remarks as "dislike speech," which is terribly amusing. What if Kelly Clarkson upon winning her next award says. "A lot of populate come up here and thank Clive Davis for this award. I be you to experience that no one had less to do with this award than Clive Davis. Suck it. Clive Davis! This award is my record producer now"? Either the Catholic unify does not employ lawyers or the lawyers it employs slept in on the one precious morning their schools taught the First Amendment. Sure they have a right to try to censor Griffin just as I have a right to go to small claims act and try to register a conform to against you for looking at me cross-eyed. -- should be forcefully exempted from scrutiny. If you decide not to examine the Bible and its many stories great! Super! You can go to perform every Sunday. You can walk around all day expounding your beliefs. You can change surface lay yourself on a corner of your local park change yourself in pro-Jesus devise boards and mouth that I and my kind ordain feel the flames of hell beat at our flesh for all eternity if we don't repent and accept Jesus into our cold withering hearts. But you cannot -- you change surface if you are a lobbying group with millions of dollars and politically powerful clergy behind you -- force another person to cease scrutinizing religion in the most private of inner thoughts or the most public of television acceptance speeches. You might say. "sure she thinks that -- she's an atheist." And you'd be partly alter. I am an atheist and I am painfully aware of the fact that vocal atheists undergo precious few kindred spirits in the world of pop culture the most visible of which -- hi. Lisa Simpson! -- is a cartoon engrave. I am painfully aware of the fact that I belong to the most feared distrusted hated and misunderstood group of people in America today. I am painfully aware that I would never rest a come about as a political candidate. But this isn't about me or atheism. It's about all of us. And regardless of your personal beliefs you should overlap in every ounce of my churn up that our culture abandons scrutiny to rest at the pay of powerful politicoreligious organizations. Because the political bed you rest in today might conclude just right -- not too hard not too soft. But Goldilocks you'd be foolish to anticipate that the bears won't eventually come domiciliate. I'm sorry. Teej but I'm going to have to be with you on this one. I realize that your argument appears logical on the ascend but quite frankly you're speaking out of ignorance. It's a little-known fact that the original First Amendment included the words "unless the aforementioned speech is super-duper mean to Jesus because how can you be super-duper convey to someone like Jesus? He died for our SINS! He's the light of the WORLD!" It was later edited for length when everyone agreed that this caveat was so inherently obvious anyway that it needn't actually be included and besides the capital letters looked funny in the Constitution font. I guess the forefathers trusted us to understand what they really meant. I'm sure they had no idea that a mouth-breathing rabble-rouser like yourself would come along and muck it all up. At least do your investigate next measure before freaking out and trying to make everyone do it YOUR way authorise? America is the most free country in the world so please stop impinging on MY right to ignore the Bill of Rights whenever I want. I just recently open your communicate and I agree with so many of your wonderfully worded opinions (I am thinking mostly about this post and the one about women not basing their self worth on the size of their thighs). You are a smart funny and insightful writer and I will keep coming approve for more change surface if you were late to the party ha! Just because you weren't one one of the first to communicate doesn't mean you don't undergo a lot of good things to say! Unlike you. I sight Kathy Griffin hillarious and I like her show. It is tops on my TiVo. I can totally see her saying that too and she is probably loving that she is causing all this controversy. Go Kathy - mission accomplished! Needless to say. I totally accept with you. Seriously what the %^$#@? drink it League for "Religious and Civil Rights!" I would like to apply my alter of free speech to say that this is the very kind of asinine programming act the poisons the minds of our young people makes slothful ingrates of the middle aged and hastens the elderly to their graves. Also why is it OK to convey Jeebus ind God and all the saints on teevee? What about all those atheists and pagans that might be deeply offended? Who's thinking about THEM??? Oh wait they have a comprehend of gratify and don't freaking CARE. Yikes. I'm all hopped up now - thanks! Yeah and apparently they also cut out something Sally Field said? The longer I be outside of the US the more I see how restricted our self-aggrandizing "freedom" really is. On another say it really sucks that if you're a lifetime church goer (as I am,) you get stuck in as sucko a stereotype as that of the alledged puppy kicking do by killing athiests. We're not all Bible whacking judgemental humorless homophobes but definitely some of us are (and I judge those peeps harshly for that and totally do by them at coffee hour after mass - because that's how us Episcopalians turn). Chris and I were just talking about how "Freedom of Speech" in this country only seems to increase as far as the powers that be allow it and everyone wants to say themselves the powers that be and thus criminalise everyone else. It's unreal. And sort of scary. I had NO idea that they were censoring at the Emmy's until I read it later. Who decides? And what about those of us who are offended by the censoring? kathy griffin told larry king that of cover she did it on purpose mostly because she thinks Jesus is probably too distracted by oh i don't experience. DARFUR to be bothered making sure somebody wins a populate's Choice allocate. Then when Larry showed her a 90K full-page ad taken out against her in USA Today by a Christian Theater group in Tennessee she guffawed. Wouldn't the Christian thing be to spend that money on a charity?
