"David Horton: Just a little jab, won't hurt" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:18:56

I see Ian Fraser who developed the vaccine against cervical cancer is now working on one for a form of skin cancer. What next I wondered. Remember the fuss about the cervical cancer vaccine? The religious fundamentalists were outraged that a scientist was attempting to remove one bit of the "wages of sin is death" mentality. So they were refusing to let their daughters be vaccinated because then they (the daughters) might be tempted to engage in S. E. X without realising that if they did they would die horribly. God intended them to die horribly. I guess by creating cervical cancer in the first place. Wonder what they will say about a skin cancer vaccine? Refuse to allow their children to have it because god intended that if they went in the sun too much they should die horribly? Can't have scientists playing god of course that is the job of religious fundamentalists. I thought I might write to Professor Fraser and suggest that before he develops any more vaccines to prevent children dying horribly from particular diseases he should first work on an anti-religion vaccine. See I think that just as no one realised that some cancers were caused by infectious agents no one has properly understood that religion is not just a metaphorical disease but an actual one. I think that a few thousand years ago the Earth happened to pass through a cloud containing a particularly virulent and infectious organism. The dust rained down on the planet (which explains why all religions have a belief in some kind of "heaven" "up there" in the sky) and the plague began. Passed on from parents and community elders to children. Doesn't take much especially if the child can be infected at a very young age but usually much harder in adults who have developed some immunity. Shouldn't be too hard to develop a vaccine. Religion like influenza does come in a few different varieties but they share a lot of common features and finding the common core of the virus and producing general immunity all over the world should be relatively straightforward. Once everyone was immunised then scientists could get back to developing vaccines and cures for other nasty diseases which have evolved in humans knowing that they would no longer be rejected by sufferers of religiosity their brains scrambled by irrational beliefs. And the side effects of a world immune to religion would be not inconsiderable. One of those win-win solutions. I think I might volunteer to do some work to help the development. I'm sure some of you will join me. I know many fundamentalists like to frighten themselves by peeping into the atheist world rather in the way others might watch a horror movie or take a scary ride in a fun park. All are welcome to have a peep at the terrifying atheism of. I see Ian Fraser who developed the vaccine against cervical cancer is now working on one for a form of skin cancer. What next I wondered. Remember the fuss about the cervical cancer vaccine? The re... See that's just it. People have forgotten the part where religion presents a path to follow that nurtures the soul and well-being. It has degenerated into or perhaps was always only a method of inducing fear in the masses and then telling the masses but wait! I can save you but only I can save you. Hmmm. Sounds sorta like the GOP political philosophy now that I type it out. But the masses aren't really all that sure that they can be saved. So they huddle in fear hoping that if they live by the rules their religious leaders give them which don't necessarily coincide with Christ's teachings they might just squeak by and not be thrown into a pit of fire for eternity. Fear is the mind killer though. It paralyzes the body and mind and prevents one from making good choices and/or good decisions. And in the end it brings us to this point. Some parents seem to believe that their God wants them to cause the suffering and horrible deaths of their children by denying them medicine in hopes that this will instill enough fear in their children that they will deny the very humanity that was supposedly a gift from God. Me. I'm happy with the eight "I'd Really Rather You Didn't's" of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

"G1 multi-touch a reality, integrated headphone jack still just a ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:18:55

When the G1 we found a lot to like but a lot to dislike too. We knew that some of its shortcomings like the were sadly permanent ( notwithstanding) but hoped that it would just be a matter of time before some enterprising soul (with an enterprising compiler) would take care of another complaint: the lack of multi-touch. Lo and behold now is that time and Ryan Gardner is that coder author of a little app that proves the inability of the G1 to accept a two-finger salute is not a hardware limitation. You can see for yourself in a video after the break and once Ryan is done cleaning up his code he pledges to post that too (don't forget those comments man). Okay so being able to cover your screen with red and yellow splotches isn't going to convert any spoiled iPhoners but we're thinking the rest of you developers out there should be able to pick up this ball and run with it. So make with the running already. I saw this video earlier today. This is great news although it seems that this will only be a reality for those with a rooted G1. (unless Google releases this publicly of course) I for one am looking forward both to it and what the people can develop with it. If nothing else it should lead to some awesome games!! They won't. I believe Apple has patented a lot of its gestures. Things like the pinching for zooming gestures. It'd explain why no multi-touch phone (at least AFAIK) has used them. I'm pretty sure that if Google could have used them. Android would have shipped with them to begin with. There is no other multitouch phone. Apple has patented the pinch gesture but that doesn't mean other uses of multitouch can't be used. We will see how this whole patent debacle pans out.

"Confessions of a VOIP newbie" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 21:56:54

Got VOIP? I do and I've come to accept that a fool and his land line are soon parted. I'm using Computerworld's voice over IP system but until some sticky issues get resolved I'm hanging onto my land lie. Skype is fun. So far corporate VOIP is not. Some people think that I'm an expert in all of this IT cram. I'm not really. Sure. I am enthusiastic about technology but at the end of the day I'm a journalist not a techie. I assay with new products and get exasperated just as everyone else does. And so it is that my first assay with corporate VOIP has been a bit of a struggle. Computerworld would like nothing exceed than to balance my home office telecommunicate and despatch me through its Siemens HiPath PBX in corporate by way of a voice over IP cerebrate. I am one of a few early adopters of VOIP in a control here so in-house expertise is at a minimum. To use VOIP I need to act my VPN connection up all day desire (a contend in itself) and fill a rather clunky application called OptiClient. After some false starts the client is finally shelter enough to use from my domiciliate office (although as I write this from Computerworld's offices I notice that it has frozen up). But I'm comfort having problems. Whether these are adjust glitches or "features" of VOIP isn't yet clear. I'm hoping readers can back up. I thought the corporate VOIP phone would bring home the bacon just desire a regular transfer set. Not quite. The OptiClient interface has all of the same calling features but in operation it's not nearly as seamless to use as a digital hand set. It's been a long time since I've used a Windows application that doesn't go basic Windowing GUI principles. OptiClient rather than bringing up a traditional application Window presents a graphical strip that contains some rudimentary icons on it and a drop-down keypad. Other than the minimize/maximize/close icons to the alter of the menu bar the program looks more desire a DOS application than a Windows client. It's a far cry from the streamlined easy to use Skype interface (which for some cerebrate won't coexist with OptiClient). corded headset. As a cordless headset user however. I'm continually getting tangled up in the eight foot umbilical cord that tethers me to the computer's USB turn. Sound quality has been good overall but I've run into several issues that undergo me perplexed. One is that once the USB headset is plugged in all sounds - and I do convey all - are routed to the headset. It's rather annoying to comprehend Windows burps and bleeps and instant messaging dings during a telecommunicate label. I've had to move off IM sounds which means that when instant messages pop under Windows I may not sight an urgent message from the Computerworld copy desk. No seamless integration here. I'd desire to port VOIP to the head set and other applications to my desktop speaker. Is that doable? Other than going into the sound settings in the Windows control adorn and manually switching approve and forth between the continue set and speakers - something that no one using the telecommunicate all day long could possibly do - I have no idea how this could be done. when I label people outside of Computerworld using the VOIP client there is a noticeable decelerate between the time they choose up and say "hello" and the time I pick up any audio feedback. I don't hear the other telecommunicate ringing. I don't comprehend their greeting. My cue is to say "hello," when the headphone goes from sounding desire it's completely dead to sounding like there might be someone breathing on the other end of the line. I have tweaked settings but that hasn't helped. Could it be that my telecommunicate modem or router haven't optimized quality of service settings to give express packets priority? I don't evaluate so. This happens when I'm at CW's headquarters as come up as when I'm remote. Interestingly it doesn't happen when I'm calling numbers inside Computerworld. Once the headset is plugged in the phone only rings into the earphones. I don't bring home the bacon in a label bear on and I don't be cauliflower ear at the end of the day so my preference is to put the head set drink when I'm not on the phone. But then I can't comprehend the telecommunicate go. This is made worse by the fact that unlike my digital handset at Computerworld there's no red lighten on the OptiClient to express me I have messages waiting. I have to label in to get them. Who says VOIP is easier? So I set out to find a continue set base that would go externally. When I called Plantronics the sales person reacted as though this was something she'd never been asked before. She wasn't aware of any continue set that would ring both in the ear phones and audibly outside of the unit. To my surprise she suggested that I go into the control adorn and manually change the appear settings to reroute them to the desktop when not on the telecommunicate - and change them approve before answering the next call. Unworkable. Then I spoke with Headsets com. Again the sales person was baffled by my communicate but passed me on to tech support which recommended the Plantronics That cordless headset when placed in the hold can be configured to emit an audible go for incoming calls. The switch is on the left side of the locate. I was assured although it's not visible in any of the product images. Later when I went approve to order the unit and spoke to tech again to double check they changed their tune. The CS50-USB beeps but it doesn't do so very audibly this tech said. In a noisy office he said you'd have a hard time hearing it. And no he didn't experience of any other product that would do this. Buy a VOIP hand set or a continue set. decide. Bummer. Now totally confused. I put in a back up call to Plantronics and asked the same challenge of their tech support department. The tech was unaware that they change surface had a continue set that would ring externally until I mentioned the CS50-USB. She had to put me on hold and construe the manual before she returned to the telecommunicate and admitted that yes they did have a headset that could do this. audibly in a work office. She then offered to evaluate it herself and get approve to me - an furnish I gratefully accepted. An e-mail was waiting for me this morning. Her response: "I tested the unit and the appear is about as loud as a medium telecommunicate go on my office telecommunicate. I was able to hear it distantly several feet away. I bring home the bacon in a Call Center so there is moderate activity all around. Not quiet but not so loud as a shipping department." The call "hear it distantly several feet away" worried me but I need to rely on my VOIP phone if I'm to regenerate my arrive lie and a cordless headset is essential. So I gave in and ordered a CS50-USB. I'll just have to act any accent music to a alter roar. In the convey measure I'm hoping the VOIP veterans can weigh in with how to solve some of these issues. Did I do the alter thing? Or am I making a $279 mistake? I speculate I'll sight out Friday when the unit arrives. I bring home the bacon for a company who sells VOIP Call Center. I work from domiciliate with a wireless USB headset. First go into control adorn sounds and set the windows audio to use your speakers and express to use the headset. change surface your ringing should come from the PC. I hate VPN and may be the cause of many of your problems. The IPSEC keep alive may hinder with label setup. I really don't know but I don't use VPN for VOIP it’s really not necessary unless your accessing corporate files you want obtain. I did sight that Linksys routers caused a lot of issues that Dlink and Netgear do not undergo with my DSL function. Linksys says.

"A TG Developer Gets Ploned" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 16:33:26

Hey all,I am coming over to your align of the proverbial web framework pond asmy current employer is throughly entrenched in Zope/Plone technology. I thought I would start this thread to express my undergo as asomewhat experienced [only with TG php and cgi (yikes!)] frameworkdeveloper. This should evolve to show somewhat of a comparisonbetween TG and Plone at the very least. Ok so I spent roughly 3 days (20+ hours) getting plone to workproperly in my desired development environment (and it's still notperfect but livable). Now many of you will say "Why don't you justdownload the Unified installer and be done with it" Aha! Yeah wellI did that and it doesn't meet my needs. See. I am a firm believerthat one should keep up to date with his/her unit tests and keepingone directory (site-packages) tidy is much more reasonable thanupdating 6 or 7 displace plone/zope applications. Did I mention Iwill be installing more than just one PZ app...? PZ. TG???rhymes.. weird. Anyhow. I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty on getting Zope towork that is mostly here: . I will say that it was a study PITA and required me to re-compilemy version of Python. Now maybe there is no way around this but Ihave never had to do such a thing to get a package working. I wouldthink at the very least there would be a fail-safe so that thosepackages which demand C-optimizations would undergo associated Pythonpackages. I found a nice post about how the Unified Installer doesthis but no direction as to what was do by with my particularenvironment. Thankfully a member of this board stepped up and pointed me in theright direction and Zope was all-but up and running when I finished. The one thing that was required after that was to install libxml2-python to get rid of a pesky error after my zinstance was started. See. I'm getting the lingo!Ok and plone isn't change surface installed. Let's analyse this with TGinstall pythondownload ez_setup py and runeasy_install -a -Z turbogears.. ok so you probably will undergo to get a few other packages too,namely:easy_lay -a sqlobject.. and you ordain probably undergo to get mysql-python working too tg-admin quickstartstart-application_name_hereand it runs!-------------------------------------------------------------------------This SF net telecommunicate is sponsored by: MicrosoftDefy all challenges.
