Receiving notice for diligent work is sometimes the best write of appreciation an individual can be given. For 241 Loyalist College students chosen from 1,287 undergraduates. Thursday Nov. 15 was a night of achievement and recognition at the annual undergraduate awards.
Of the 264 awards handed out worth a be of $164,281. 46 people won multiple awards. According to Awards command Joanne Farrell all of the usual awards were given out in addition to several new ones. She mentioned the President's appeal Scholarships given to first-year students based on entrance grades as some of the more significant awards given out at the ceremony.
Erica Prins a third-year business administration student specializing in human resources was one of the multiple allocate winners. She walked away with two prizes in recognition of her high-level of academic achievement including the 3M Canada allocate for second-year academic achievement and in-class participation and leadership. She also received the attach Canada Award signifying her academic proficiency.
"It is nice to be recognized unexpected for sure. I never evaluate to win awards. The only goal is to do the best you can do," says Prins humbly.
Prins who is currently taking on a heavy workload with six courses (two online and four regular courses) has been recognized for her high academic achievement in the past. She is already a two time recipient of the Governor General's Medal for the student with the highest grade point average in the college. She had an average of over 98 per cent during the 2006-07 academic year. According to Prins there are certain keys to success that any aspiring high academic achiever should practice.
"Communicate with faculty to get all of the information you can about what you are working towards. To hit the books as much as you can you have to communicate with faculty so the more involvement they see from you the more they are going to think of you when these sorts of things come available," says Prins.
Farrell suggested it is more than a coincidence that many of the students who received awards this year are actively involved in the community in addition to meeting other criteria such as maintaining excellent grades or financial need.
Prins who also works part-time at the Quaker Oats plant in Trenton says her cover fill is necessary to attaining her goal of getting her human resources certification by the end of the current school year. Her goal is to work in the human resources sector upon graduating.
"I evaluate everybody can be an excellent student it is just the amount of focus you put on your work," says Prins.
First-year Electrical Engineering Technician student Shawn Loney also had a big night. Loney took home three awards by winning the Ferris Scholarship Fund Bursary (presented this year for the first time). County of Hastings allocate and the Town of Bancroft Bursary.
Other multiple award winners included Amber Madden a third-year business accounting student given the President's Recognition allocate and the Wilkinson and affiliate Scholarship; Ryan Grani second-year television and new media production student won the Guy Weese Memorial Bursary (a new allocate) in addition to the Barry Howard Award; Michelle Traux second-year advertising major was awarded for excellence in the advertising program as well as the Hardisty Scholarship and Chidi Nwaozomudoh also a second-year television and new media production student received an allocate for campus compassionate and one of the seven Loyalist College International Scholarships for returning students.
