Originally from the Chicago area. Arien O’Connell is a fifth-grade teacher from New York City. She traveled to San Francisco to run the Nike Women’s Marathon in late October.
Arien was not a favorite to win; in fact she was not even with the elite runners when they were given a 20-minute head-start.
But she didn’t win—Nora Colligan who ran a 3:06:30 crossed the finish line first.
Since Arien didn’t run with the elite group her time would not count in the overall victory.
Nike did come around and finally name her a winner. Not the winner,
winner. Apparently Nike was sick of all the phone calls from people on behalf of Arien.
The reason I am bringing up Arien is that her story reminds me a lot of our team and what we did last Saturday. We weren’t the favorite. People counted us out. We came into the East Peoria Sectional and simply performed.
O’Connell who describes herself as “a pretty good runner,” had never managed to break three hours in five previous marathons. But as soon as she started at 7 a m. Sunday she knew it was her day. In fact when she crossed the finish line 26.2 miles later her time of 2:55:11 was so unexpectedly fast that she burst into tears.
“I ran my best time by like 12 minutes which is insane,” she said.
To me it sounds like Arien put herself in the best position to do her best on that particular day.
She put herself in the best position to succeed and ultimately did.
We have the opportunity to put ourselves in the best position to succeed this weekend.
You should be well-rested today; You should have been able to sleep in and that will really help come Saturday even if you have trouble sleeping tonight.
We are staying just 14 minutes away from Detweiller (the state meet course). That is only 14 minutes on the bus prior to your race rather than hours if we had to travel from Yorkville.
You are prepared to sleep in a hotel room. It is tough sleeping in a different place but with the practice we got last weekend this weekend should be even better!
Muth and I have trained you for one day—State. Saturday. We have trained you to have the ability to run your best race at Detweiller.
That sounds scary right? That’s a lot of pressure thrust on you right? No. You have done the work. You have suffered the pain. You have had the shin splints stress fractures bruises turned ankles hip flexors and countless aches and pains.
Don’t go to the line scared you aren’t going to do well or that you’ll disappoint the coaches your teammates or anyone else. If you must go to the line a little scared go to the line scared you are not going to take advantage of all the hard work you have suffered through. Just think—there is only 14-20 minutes of pain left in this season.
If you can put yourself in the position to run your best race and leave nothing left on the course at Detweiller—not only will we be even more proud of you than we already are but it’ll be something you can hang your hat on later in life:
