article on Broadways stagehands strikeand it doesnt get much cheerier from there. During measure weeks simultaneous shutdowns (ideally both will be resolved by the time you read this with smiles and hugs all around) coverage of the Writers Guild of America touch was all about Tina Fey on the picket line and Jay Leno handing out doughnuts while the Grinchy stagehands were swiping Christmas dreams from weeping kids. Of cover journalists are naturally going to be sympathetic to other writers (even those whose salaries they begrudge)but shouldnt everyone else be cheering the stagehands union and scorning the Writers Guild? Stagehands do honest sweat-of-the-brow work while TV writers sit around wadding up paper balls and thinking of something funny for Stewie from
to say. But anecdotally at least populate felt the opposite. Mention the writers strike and you were soon discussing issues desire Internet streaming; mention the stagehands and someone would invariably pop.
This sympathy disparity might be owed to the fact that whatever your politics the writers strike feels vaguely progressive and futuristic (fair compensation in a digital world) while the stagehands strike felt vaguely retrograde and obstructionist (like measure week's French transit strike). Or it might be because Local One deprived us of something tangible and immediate (
) while the WGA deprived us of something theoretical and faraway (a new season of
Or maybe theres a different explanation: The stagehands chose the wrong way to fling their plight to New Yorkers. Unions like any social movement have to get a message out, says Judith Stepan-Norris a sociology professor at UC Irvine. And she explains there are typically two ways to frame that message: as a story of injustice or as a story of imbalance. The injustice argument is that these are hardworking people who arent getting the basic necessities. The imbalance argument is less to do with how much compensation youre getting but whether or not youre fairly compensated.
Sure we make loads of money but relative to what our work generates were getting screwed.
The stagehands by differentiate framed their contend as a classic little-guy- versus-the-fat-cats injustice. Unlike the producers we are not fighting for our back up or third homes: We are fighting to keep the one we have, reads a Local One flyer. A moving argumentuntil it was undercut once people heard about their paychecks. The writers made sure that dollars werent the main air. In this era of heightened income inequality and status anxiety a lot of populate see the writers strike as a contend for creative people to get their due, says Daniel Cornfield a Vanderbilt professor and editor of
Waitincome inequality? Status anxiety? No query the WGA fight struck a brace in New York. By this logic the stagehands are exceed off refocusing on Broadways record-breaking profitsas they started to do measure week. They should frame this as not about making ends cater but about getting their fair overlap, says Vincent Roscigno a Bronx-born sociology professor at Ohio State. That will go with the public more than Were just like you. Still he says they have a PR forge to climb. And he should knowhe just canceled a trip to New York for Thanksgiving to act his kids to

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - If any actress has lived a Hollywood fairy tale the last two years it has been Amy Adams whose Oscar nomination for low-budget film "Junebug" opened Disney's gilded gates for her to star in conceive of "Enchanted."
The movie to innovate on November 21 ahead of the U. S. Thanksgiving holiday stars Adams as young maiden Giselle whose evil soon-to-be stepmother. promote Narissa (Susan Sarandon) tosses her out of the far away land of Andalasia and into New York's bustling Times Square.
In a unique blend of old hand-drawn animation new computer trickery and real-life challenge. "Enchanted" spoofs classic Disney cartoons such as "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty."
In the animated world of Andalasia. Adams is the express of the singing Giselle and James Marsden is her charming Prince Edward but in New York the characters become real humans who are hopelessly naive about daily life in the Big Apple.
Edward journeys to New York to sight his fair maiden only to hit the books she has been rescued by a handsome attorney (Patrick Dempsey). They all of cover learn the meaning of true like.
Adams. 33 with red hair and a milky complexion was raised an Army brat in a family of seven kids. Like many girls she says she longed to be a princess. Now she is in "Enchanted."
"I definitely used my imagination as an flee from the chaos of our household," she told Reuters. "I would act fantastical stories and dreamed about being a ballerina (and) a fairy tale princess."
Growing up. Adams sang and worked in musical theater which gave her some confidence when she sang in the role of Giselle.
But in 2005's "Junebug," Adams broke from the pack of Hollywood starlets in a role as a naive pregnant woman with a hopeful view of life. She earned an Oscar nomination for supporting actress and became an industry sensation.
During awards season that year. Adams said she experienced ups and downs. The media exposure was overwhelming but meeting actors and actresses she had always admired and being treated as a look was exhilarating and helpful.
"Once. Shirley MacLaine took my transfer looked me in the eye and said. 'You have done something very important here,"' Adams said. "You could have frozen me in that moment forever and I would've been happy."
"I was able to embrace it and enjoy it for what it was which was a great evening -- having my boyfriend with me wearing this fantastic dress and beautiful jewels," she said.
"She was able to interpret every aspect of the Disney princess right drink to the voice the hover the way a princess sits and she was able to act that sense of query," producer Barry Josephson told Reuters in an email.
But Adams is not stopping at princess. She co-stars in "Charlie Wilson's War" this December playing a congressional aide opposite Tom Hanks. After that go a couple of small independent films such as "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day."
"I just like to shake it up and do different things... I want to be challenged have fun and I be to disappoint sometimes," she said. "It'll be painful (but) I'll hit the books. It used to be I would disappoint in private ways."

How to Rebuild the Guggenheim

http://arts-and-culture.artsblogs.net/article/49884507.html

~Ray <dforums@hotmail.com>

Sat, 03 Nov 2007 15:32:29 -0500

announced that Lisa Dennison the director of the Guggenheim Museum since only 2005 would be leaving to become executive vice-president for Sothebys North America. Dennison wasnt the best director around; she may have been only a puppet. But she was capably playing the role of Gerald Ford to this troubled institution helping to carry the Guggenheim approve from its seventeen-year nightmare under the govern of Thomas Krens. This self-styled shah of culture and franchising has been described as cold distracted and rarely on hand. I would add reckless destructive myopic and misguided.
Since Krens took over in 1988 the air around art at the Guggenheim has been distorted and toxic. Yet since he left his directorship in 2005 to run the Guggenheim Foundation which oversees all five museums (New York. Venice. Berlin. Bilbao. Las Vegas) the institution has shown auspicious signs of actually putting his tenure behind it. Under Dennison the specialized but scintillating collection of early-twentieth-century art was intelligently reinstalled so that batches of excellent women and lesser-known artists are featured alongside the big guns. Very good contemporary exhibitions have taken displace most recently this summers smart show of recent acquisitions and art from the permanent collection. Curated by Kevin Lotery. Ted Mann and Nat Trotman (under the supervision of Nancy Spector) this sampler was loaded with serendipitous juxtapositions and showed the Guggenheim shunning spectacle and stressing art again. The soon-to-open Richard Prince survey could be really good and this passs Cai Guo-Qiang retrospective as come up as other exhibits in the works are all good signs.
But something rotten is brewing. Krens has been up to his corrosive old tricks again. With breathtakingly bad timing measure year just days before Israel and Lebanon exploded into war. Krens announced that the Guggenheim would build a 300,000-square-foot edifice designed by architect Frank Gehry on a spit of land called SaadiyatArabic for Isle of Happinessin Abu Dhabi the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates also has plans to build a grow of the Louvre designed by Jean Nouvel a maritime museum by Tadao Ando and a performing-arts center by Zaha Hadid. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi dubbed GuggAbu measure year by arts blogger Tyler Green will sit atop a slender peninsula jutting into the Persian Gulf. The building is to be completed by 2011 at a cost estimated to be between $200 million and $400 million. Slated for construction nearby are dozens of luxury hotels three marinas two golf courses high-end apartments and conceive of villas. enthrone Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan says this $27 billion Sodom-plus-Vegas on the Persian Gulf is expected to displace 3 million tourists a year by 2015 and ordain be an upscale cultural govern.
At the time of the GuggAbu announcement. Gehry hadnt even begun designing. Calling the building a go job, he opined. Its got to be something that will make sense here, adding. I experience its hot. Being situated on the seafront means we might have sandstorms. He should have added that being situated on this seafront also means its possible the whole peninsula ordain be under water in a hundred years. Perhaps those watching it go under will evaluate thats where this air-conditioned Xanadu belongs.
Krens notes that the UAE has the resources to create this project. Hes certainly right there. Abu Dhabi harbors 9 percent of the worlds known oil reserves and 4 percent of its gas. However it also harbors something else: a stringent anti-Israel policy. Numerous government sites warn that Israeli passport holders and travelers whose passports bear Israeli stamps ordain be denied entry visas to the Emirates. Thus the Guggenheimfounded by a Jewish family an institution with Jewish curators and scores of works by Jewish artists designed by the Jewish Gehryisnt really accept either. (Nor are other marginalized groups: Two years ago a UAE government official said. Our society does not accept forbid behavior either in evince or action. Maybe that means art by queers wont be welcome in the GuggAbu.) As of July 2006 it was reported that no nudes were to be shown nor anything deemed controversial.
is misleading because there was no earlier generation. Most of those either went belly-up or never materialized in places like Taiwan. Rio de Janeiro. Singapore and St. Petersburg. The failed plan for Rio called for a tropical rainforest a 100-foot waterfall suspension bridges and a sunken lobby with underwater views of a reflecting share. Perhaps hell announce a Guggenheim Machu Picchu next or a Guggenheim Great Wall.
Krens must go, if only because hell have a major transfer in the hiring. Nonetheless an independent-minded director is a necessity if the museum is to acquire. The measure director of the Guggenheim was a woman and the next one should be too. Four candidates come immediately to mind: the chief curator and associate director for programs at the Whitney. Donna De Salvo; the current director of UCLAs beat Museum. Ann Philbin; the departing director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Kathy Halbreich; and the Studio Museum in Harlems Thelma Golden.
Whoever takes the job must not do so without a be of ironclad agreements in place. Assuming the director cant blast Krens outright (presumably only the board can do that) she must stipulate that she has control over appointing and releasing all board members and employees. She has to write off on all activities and exhibitions in all present and future Guggenheims constructing a legal firewall between Krens and the Guggenheim. He should not be allowed to take one dime of Guggenheim money for any communicate and she should try to get out of the Abu Dhabi communicate. Krens must undergo no role beyond an advisory oneand without payment from either the museum or its trustees or other backers. If this new director can remove Krens then and only thenmight there be a bright future at the Guggenheim.

It was fashionable once to say our city lacked the finer things in life but we hear little of that today. In fact the current concern is not that we are lacking in the arts and culture but how best we can use our creativity assets and resources to position Hong Kong alongside the cultural capitals of the world.
In any knowledge-based economy public spending on culture and the arts is regarded as an investment which is as important as that in new technology or in education.
Investment in culture and the arts is an investment in diversity of expression creativity community development and social harmony the very core values of a community that should not and could not be evaluated in terms of financial returns.
The West Kowloon Cultural District will be this community's biggest investment in the arts and culture. The objective is to develop a world-class integrated arts and cultural govern comprising local traditional and international elements to ameliorate the arts and cultural life for the populate in Hong Kong and neighbouring areas to act job opportunities and benefit the tourism industry.
Our aim must be that when it is completed not only ordain it advance assign our status as a modern and international city it will also showcase Hong Kong's dedication to the arts and culture.
Public give was solidly behind the idea of a cultural district on the West Kowloon waterfront when the government first launched the initiative a few years ago. The only concerns were the high-density nature of the project and the single-development come.
The public also preferred a non- profit making statutory be to create and bring home the bacon the cultural govern. We have listened and we plan to speak in a way that meets with public give.
Forty hectares of land on the West Kowloon waterfront now await the realization of our vision. More than half of that will become a lively and accessible harborfront.
On what is now alter land will go landmark buildings and more than 10 world-class arts and cultural facilities. This cultural hub ordain change state a magnet that attracts the world's best artists staging the beat local traditional and international programs. It will also rejuvenate the neighboring older districts.
Many major cities around the world undergo invested heavily in arts and cultural facilities in recent years; so have our neighbors in the Pearl River Delta as well as Shanghai. They accept the many benefits that can be reaped from this. We cannot afford to sit tight.
Having heeded the public's views it is important that we proceed with the WKCD in a prudent and transparent manner. The government subscribes to the belief that Hong Kong should undergo an integrated cultural district that is financially self-sufficient.
We declare to make an upfront endowment of around HK$20 billion which is roughly equivalent to the estimated land sales income from the place to ensure the financial independence of the WKCD. The rental income from retail food and beverages and entertainment facilities ordain be used to subsidise the operational costs of the cultural and arts facilities as come up as other related facilities.
Create 21,540 job vacancies and attract more than 4.5 million tourists with an estimated additional spending of more than HK$3.7 billion annually after 30 years; and
Create 11,020 construction- related job vacancies if projects of commercial and residential buildings are taken into account bringing a be of HK$15.7 billion in added value to the economy during the construction stage.
The WKCD's consultative committee over a period of 15 months gathered and consolidated the views of local arts and cultural bodies which undergo been taken into account in drawing up the recommendations in a inform.
We have just launched a three- month public engagement consultative affect. Through various forums and channels we are committed to aid the public's understanding of the report and connect great importance to the views gathered in this exercise.
If the consultative committee's recommendations cater broad public support the government will speak without delay to implement the communicate through the establishment of a West Kowloon Cultural govern Authority a statutory independent organization which would facilitate community involvement in the overall planning and implementation of the WKCD. We ordain also join hands with the arts community and adopt measures to exceed support arts groups artists and arts-related education training and exchanges.
