"Sydney Gallery Presents Sidney Nolan's Paintings" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-19 00:08:30

The breathtaking speed of execution and prolific output of Nolan – estimated to be many thousands of paintings – has always proven a dilemma for the many retrospectives during his lifetime the last being organised by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1987 for the artist’s 70th birthday. The exhibition features many of Nolan’s finest masterpieces; some 120 paintings gathered from public and private collections in Australia. London the United States and France. Many have rarely been seen in public thus contributing to a fresh experience for a younger generation and perhaps rediscovery for those who conclude they are already familiar with the artist. The paintings are displayed in strict chronology underlining the evolution of Nolan’s vision from its genesis in Melbourne during the late 1930s to the UK half a century later. Each critical arrange is represented from the St Kilda and Wimmera themes through the first Ned Kelly series. Central and Northern Australian landscapes and explorer subjects. African. Antarctic and European paintings to Chinese and Australian-inspired abstractions. Emphasis is given to the late spray-painted. Chinese landscapes and abstractions which in some ways are an echo of how Nolan began in the highly charged years of his adolescence. For beneath the originality of his approach to adorn nature and history themes over more than 50 years there was an enduring passion for the purely formal possibilities of painting. Driven forward at velocity by a powerful instinct. Nolan was aware of the bewilderment entangle by critics at his diversity of styles and subject. It helps to remember in this regard the most consistent influences which inspired him constantly to challenge conventional boundaries and go beyond them: the poets Rimbaud. Blake and Rilke. His faith in their ideas fed his impulse to travel to all corners of the planet with an insatiable curiosity to sight the extent of the unknown that his painting might encompass. Some of Nolan’s most famous paintings are included such as Boy and the idle 1939-40 the iconic Kelly masterpiece First class marksman 1946. Pretty polly mine 1948. Burke and Wills leaving Melbourne 1950. The temptation of St Anthony 1952 and Rimbaud at Harar 1963. The epicentre of the retrospective however is the historic conjoining in two semi-circles – echoing Monet’s famous waterlilies murals in Paris – of the multi-panel paintings Riverbend I 1964-65 and Riverbend II 1965-66 where we may change state immersed in Nolan’s dreamlike return to the inner landscape of his childhood made indelible long before he gained a reputation as one of Australia’s greatest artists. Riverbend I and II evoke the place where the artist’s grandfather struggled on the land and as a policeman pursued the Kelly gang embedding at once in Nolan’s psyche the refrain of a violent past and a deep love of the Australian furnish. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Published by Beagle Press the catalogue includes a major act by the curator Barry Pearce and contributions by Edmund Capon. Frances Lindsay and Lou Klepac with Nolan’s own eloquent words woven throughout. ‘Ernst & Young is proud to be partnering with the Gallery on the Sidney Nolan retrospective. This exhibition reflects our commitment to the arts both in Australia and around the world and to the communities in which we serve. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is to be congratulated on this important and valuable exhibition.’ - James Millar. CEO Australia -- www artgallery nsw gov au

"All quiet on the western front? again." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:48:05

My apologies to all for dragging my feet to update the blog. I am currently juggling the beginnings of a new contract as well as trying to still sight moments to walk off to the theatre. Consequently the blog my poor blog has suffered. Mentally. I am also gearing up for the Sydney Festival. One of my favourite favourite events. There is something about a festival that makes the air comprehend sweet. And whether you are in Sydney. Melbourne. Berlin. London or even my dear Ljubljana a festival is always a magical experience. I think it’s the feeling of an international focus it’s the people on the streets it’s the fiesta it’s the summer time. The launch last Thursday evening at the Opera accommodate gave an insight into what a great festival it will be again this year. There is something about the combination of Artistic Director Fergus Linehan and General Manager Josephine Ridge that creates a great synergy for the festival. They are probably the most friendly and approachable in the game. The whole festival atmosphere certainly took the arts journo’s from all the study outlets with it as we all ended up drinking late night cocktails at some Circular Quay bar to the sound of salsa music. And on a educate night too. I was change surface luckier to have captured some of the festival spirit only the week before. As you may experience. I managed to pop down to Melbourne and catch the last gasps of MIAF. Due to some enormous Singapore Airlines plane taking off and an associated publicity stunt coupled with a few thunder storms in Sydney. I managed to miss a show on the Friday evening. But I did catch the fiesta at the Spiegeltent later that evening befriending an ensemble of Catalan artists from Teatre Lliure who were performing in the show. Coincidentally their show was the one I was attending the following evening at the Arts Centre. And I have to be with Alison Croggon’s to say that I absolutely adored the show. is boldly advertised as a prologue to Hamlet from the moment the show begins. Facing us is a three story dolls accommodate view of a contemporary domiciliate. The kitchen the lounge the chew over bedrooms bathroom and garden. It is a voyeur’s believe that harks back to something out of Rear Window. From the moment that the family arrive domiciliate from the funeral (of King Hamlet) the beautiful depth of this production digs out a movie-like contemporary tragedy as the fathers death grips the household. The maid quietly goes about her business without making a sound young Hamlet breaks drink while his dear friend Horatio gives him a bring up to cry on and Gertrude sits silently in her room overwhelmed by sorrow. Until slightly into the play the house blacks out and King Hamlet’s shadow appears in a red lighten of the master bedroom. Purists will dislike European House but for this audience member it showed the way Shakespeare can be transcend so many forms. It is like discovering Kurosawa. Kozintzev or West align Story. This moment dawned on me as the cast stopped in their tracks to the domestic drama and as one faced the audience and starting mouthing the words to ‘No surprises’ by Radiohead. This is my final fit my final bellyache withNo alarms and no surprisesNo alarms and no surprisesNo alarms and no surprises pleaseSuch a pretty house such a pretty gardenNo alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)No alarms and no surprises gratify (let me out of here) It was a beautiful anthem for Hamlet and it was supported by the quintessential video clip image that should undergo made this compulsory viewing for every high school student in the country. Bring on the Sydney Festival. But I sure as hell want as many alarms and surprises as I can get. We'll undergo to accept to differ. Nicholas! Did you see anything else at MIAF while you were drink? Because there were things that really put European House in the darken. It had its moments for sure but it just didn't quite seem to experience exactly what it was. Indeed Alison! And unfortunately I didn't see anything else at MIAF. But I do accept with you about that text on the re-create.. spelling mistakes aside that was certainly 'naff'! Rob Brookman. General Manager. Sydney Theatre affiliate "Really enjoying your blog. Keep up the good work. " ".. the wonderfully well- and outspoken Sydney theatre blogger..." This site is to bring appraise criticism discussion and debate to the performing arts and cultural industries of Sydney. It is a forum for ideas to analyse to contrast and above all to create consideration and passion. To shift the fear of dialogue and be at where we are as a community within the fabric of the national and international arts scene. Sydney Arts Journo is a journalist and arts writer whose bring home the bacon has appeared in a number of publications including the Sydney Morning Herald. Currency House and Crikey com.
