"Utah State Today - Utah State University" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:18:19

The 3rd grade students in Mrs. Rolls’s class were buzzing in small groups brainstorming topics for limericks. They already know the “rules” of limericks — the AABBA rhyme scheme the matching numbers of syllables in the lines and that limericks can be about anything — even silly stuff. The spirited activity is driven by Alicia Martin a doctoral student in Utah State University’s School of Teacher Education and Leadership. She has worked with the class and engaged the students with poetry through USU’s ArtsBridge program. Martin plans to be a teacher educator when she completes her degree and her dissertation research focuses on children writing poetry. She has previous classroom experience teaching elementary school for seven years and has a master’s degree in curriculum development and instructional design. She said she has always found reading and writing poetry enjoyable and wants to figure out the best ways to pass on that love to teachers and children. For a final project the students have elected to create their own book of poetry. They will revise and edit the rough drafts then publish their poetry in a handmade book. Martin the teachers and the students are all excited about poetry and look forward to being published poets. USU ArtsBridge is administered through the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art on the campus of Utah State University and is an affiliate of ArtsBridge America a unique research-based school/university partnership in arts education. ArtsBridge America is a network of university schools of art and education dedicated to providing high-quality arts instruction to K-12 school children and community organizations. All projects are provided free at no cost to schools.

"week 3- making contacts in New Zealand" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:37:40

I am taking an independent study with Amy Shimshon-Santo and further developing my internship for New Zealand. After many emails to countless professors and community arts members in Auckland and throughout New Zealand I have two prospects: Marilyn Kohlhase. Director o'kaioceanikart and Herman Pi'ikea Clark a member of the faculty of the College of Education at Massey University in New Zealand. I asked myself the following questions to help me clarify my intentions for this internship. My answers follow each question. say: One of the distinguishing features of New Zealand Arts education has beenthe inclusion of Maori and Pacific cultural perspectives within the contentand teaching orientation of the national arts curriculum and teachereducation processes. (source: Herman Pi'ikea Clark. Massey University)1.) What do I need prior to my arrival in New Zealand? (Preparation) I am trying to make find a professor and community member (grow bearer or art teacher) in New Zealand that I could develop an internship with that involves me working in the community in either a educate setting or youth bear on setting that has children/teenagers learning and or practicing Pacific Island culture/dance/language/customs. Since my specialty is in dance in arts education. I would desire to sight the opportunities to not only observe other art teachers in their processes but I would also desire a come about to teach a move course myself to students utilizing my own knowledge and experience of U. S arts education practice and the California art strands. I would need mentorship from the professor and community member to guide me in this internship and through my research. At this measure. I be the professor and community member that I decide to work with to appoint to me books/articles/readings based around New Zealand’s national arts curriculum and move as pedagogy that I should study now before I arrive in New Zealand. 2.) What campus ordain you be at in New Zealand? (Location) I am not sure what Massey University campus I am going to be attending. It depends on what classes are being offered at each particular campus. However. I specifically want to take classes on Arts Education. New Zealand’s national school system curriculum. Pacific Island (Maori) Studies/History/Society and or Pacific Island art music and dance. These areas of study would particularly assist in my investigate and internship work. I am working on this move of the paper work (choosing classes and campus location) for EAP at the moment.3.) What is the purpose of the internship? (Purpose) The purpose of this internship is to compare specific similarities and differences between the school systems here in the United States and the school system in New Zealand. I am aware that the New Zealand educate system believes in carrying on traditional Maori traditions such as language move chants and the arts by teaching it in the classroom. I be to experience why this is. (This section may grow into my core research questions) What is the condition of their society that makes it work in New Zealand (or the condition of their school administrations)? Is this only in private educate or all schools including public? Is every student required to hit the books about the Maori culture in school? Why can’t this work in the U. S.? What is the cause or force of bringing in Pacific Island grow and arts into the classroom (in New Zealand vs in the U. S.)? Furthermore. I would specifically like to have a cerebrate on dance as pedagogy (Pacific Island move).4.) What do I be to get out of this internship? (Holistic Development) I hope to attain a exceed understanding of how the national arts curriculum functions in New Zealand and why. (I may just focus on dance education if “arts” education is too broad) I be to hit the books how it came to be this way. What are the strengths and weaknesses of New Zealand’s national arts curriculum and how can knowing this assist us in the U. S with improving our own school systems? The rich undergo of teaching and learning Pacific Island culture and move in the Pacific Island region specifically New Zealand will strengthen my knowledge about modern Pacific Rim societies and strengthen me as a teacher dancer and advocate for arts education. I will study first hand the idea of Trannationalism in reverse by practicing it- myself who has been trained in Polynesian dance in the U. S who now ordain be bringing back this Pacific art to the Pacific (New Zealand).5.) How desire ordain the internship need it to be? (Duration) I would like this internship to last the whole 6 month duration that I am studying abroad in New Zealand. February thru July of 2008. My investigate is a year desire project that includes the internship but essentially is just a component to my entire 3 year fellowship with Arts IN. My goal is to analyze the lessons from cultural move education and cultural arts education in both contexts (of New Zealand and the US) to contribute to intercultural understanding about arts education/dance education. Now that I figured all of this out hopefully i can make Marilyn Kohlhase and Herman Pi'ikea Clark my cultural bearer and professor contacts/research mentors. This week (besides attending Amy's artsbridge categorise) i will begin reserching and reading about migration immigration and transnationalism to articulate the “fluxo e refluxo” the active approve and forth relationship between the U. S and the countries where our ancestors came from. Amy suggests that I read Lisa Lowe and Aihwa Ong. She also says that the Latino Cultural Citizenship book is really good for regional identity construction and migration

"Governor's wife visits Lawrence outreach programs" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:57:04

"Where in Wisconsin is Jessica Doyle?" is a geography bet Wisconsin's First Lady Jessica Doyle has on her website to inform kids about cities in Wisconsin. measure week the answer to that question was Appleton. Doyle an avid education advise dropped by Edison Elementary School to observe two Lawrence volunteer outreach programs. LARY Buddies and ArtsBridge. Doyle's visit was a part of "Higher Education Day," designated for October 9 by the Wisconsin Governor. Superintendent of Public Instruction and other state officials. The aim of this day according to its website is to "inspire students of all ages to arrive for post-secondary education as a goal." It also tries to ameliorate Wisconsinites about financial aid and savings programs available to them for post secondary education. Lawrence's outreach programs are nationally recognized. LARY (Lawrence Assistance Reaching Youth) Buddies are Lawrence students who mentor Edison Elementary students who may be extra attention in subjects inside and outside of the classroom. ArtsBridge America created by President Jill Beck at the University of California at Irvine has move to 22 universities throughout the United States and Northern Ireland. The program was originally created to add diminishing fine arts programs in California public schools by having university students inform arts curricula. Lawrence's chapter continues with that mission. Senior Nicole Dabney a "Big Buddy" in the LARY Buddy schedule said Mrs. Doyle spoke to three Lawrence students and two Edison Elementary students about what they usually do in the program. Although "the little buddies looked pretty nervous," Dabney said. "they did a great job." Doyle's visit with the LARY buddies lasted around 15 minutes. Senior Sarah Bellmore an ArtsBridge scholar set up a flute museum and gave kids worksheets to fill out to furnish them more hands-on experience with the equip. Bellmore said Doyle came to the classroom for around 20 to 30 minutes and helped the kids fill out their worksheets. She added that the kids "were definitely excited to be the only fifth grade classroom in Appleton to have a tour from Mrs. Doyle."Doyle's visit to Appleton hopefully taught students educators and parents more about "Higher Education Day" and the availability of financial resources. At the same time however the tour surely raised the visibility of LARY Buddies and ArtsBridge. As Bellmore said. "There are many children that crave mentors that will make a difference in their lives."
