"Sleeves, by Holl" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:06:15

“The existing round building is the ‘clutch’ and our new buildings are the ‘sleeves’”. Steven Holl simply stated at his lecture last year at the NAi in Rotterdam. With the public I was left stunned by this simplicity. You take the Google Maps believe and just start drawing T-shirts. That’s it? Where was the phenomenology? For this blog I undergo been considering the subtitle ‘The use and abuse of iconography’ and I was tempted to write that this statement by Holl falls under the ‘abuse’ part. However when looking at the project more closely for this blogpost it struck me that the project has some fine and interesting features that are worth looking into. It is not so much the logo the building makes to the sky and satellites but the perspective from 1 meter 80 of the cover that makes this communicate what it is. The roof is curved downwards in very long bands. And these bands go a completely different logic than the walls. One could say this is desire lying and not being pragmatic but I really desire the conflict. When looking at the drawing-rendering-kind-of-thing it is quite hard to imagine. But a be at the surprise plan says it all. The architecture starts to live when you start walking. go the bands and the walls change around you follow the walls and the bands above dress. Pretty cool. The folding down of the roof is desire… the folds of the ‘sleeves’ of the ‘t-shirt’? Maybe. There is certainly a ‘draping’ thing going on there. For me it has also something of low clouds mostly because there is lighten coming from óver these bands. This not hanging but hovering. The fragmentation of the building into flying bands and walls underneath makes the building stand out in its surroundings. The landscape around is not littered with freestanding buildings but is structured (!) by what Kenneth Frampton calls ‘megaform’; large ensembles of volumnic stereometric architectures. There is a row of rectangular buildings opposite the street. At the end of the street this row makes a turn with an height-accent while across the street – at an go of 45 degrees - a dome rises from the ground. The building opposite that of Holl’s museum the ‘collar’-shaped t-shirt factory building has a round cause that is repeated behind that building in the landscaping of two fields and is also echoed in a smaller building to the north. I can go on like this. The inform is: this is structured landscape an architectural landscape. Steven Holl continues and disrupts this local tradition of ensembles. He continues it by relating his ‘sleeves’ to the ‘collar’ opposite the street but he disrupts the tradition first by using iconography instead of basic create and back up by breaking the volume of his museum into shifting roofs and walls. The static architecture around at Holl’s building starts to move sideways. Walls and roofs loose that static logic connection and move separate from each other in a different direction. There are times I blame the architects for making a eat of our cities by always and always proposing the contrast instead of the blending. Holl does not advance the contrast as a standard rule of the office and it does make sense here. The museum building is a public building – in contrast to the industrial buildings around. The only thing that puzzles me is the connection Holl has designed between his building and the landscape behind the building. To act the bands of the roof. Holl has designed sort of close in structures on the landscape. Not so pretty. About the place intend: There are different versions of it around. One features an long (office) building to the left the other a big pool to the right. I desire the pool version as it reminds me of the wonderful share in the German Pavilion in Barcelona by Mies van der Rohe. It would affect me if Holl didn’t have that pool in mind when painting this one. And the shifting of roof and wall… that is also the theme of the Barcelona Pavilion. Coincidence? But besides the curved roof was also already done by for instance UN Studio in Nijmegen. It is all not that new but fresh enough to be alter. There is more to this iconographic building than it seems at first. The conflicts between the intumesce’s of the ‘sleeves’ and the walls are brilliant. Not dramatic new features but –yeah- this is architecture. I remember seeing a model once that was made of bits of motherboard-pieces. It was painted silver entirely. I worked and was pretty cool. The motherboard-pieces though represented industrial structures - not buildings you actually live in. These are infrastructural elements so I think you can use them as such. Try to understand their logic and bring home the bacon on with that. Why not - for dilate - work with the etched coat paths of a chip… why not apply that as a facade pattern on a furnish facade. The paths could turn into votovoltaic screens collecting electricity from the sun. These screens I evaluate bring home the bacon somewhat like that too. In Indonesia a glass facade might be too much. Maybe an enormous fan - to cool all the computers inside - is an idea? I’m from Singapore and currently studying architecture. I’m doing on a ice-cream cafe (within a shophouse) and my concept is using solid/liquid. In a call like solid it entangle trap and compact and as solid it is more of linear. Wherelse liquid is something that is change state up and using curves. So is kind of like linear vs curves. Any suggestions and advices? I’m stuck in coming out with my concept copy. Thanks for your compliments Kellyn. I’m not really good at giving advice but I’ll furnish it a try… The distinction between the solid and liquid is great don’t mind too much about that. What you need to do is alter it concrete for dilate to couple the fluid forms with the interaction with the customers and for instance alter the freezers and stuff boxy. You could bring home the bacon that further out in the materialization of the communicate. Look at materia nl for inspiration they have a great database. I am not sure I agree with you that solid would mean ‘linear’. It certainly could be but it also could mean a more boxy grotto-like element. At the bottom of this post: there is a design by Jean Nouvel that for me really represents solidness.

"Starbucks on 14th" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-19 00:06:56

As I was walking down 14th St past The Inn at Auraria and the Denver bear on for Performing Arts today I noticed a sign in the window of the last vacant street level retail space. It appears that 14th Street is getting its own Starbucks. Personally. I have to admit I am fan of Starbucks so I think this is great. While I know some people would disagree. I think this will really enliven the middle of the block and contribute to more 24/7 activity on 14th St. With 600+ students. Curtis Hotel guests and patrons of the Denver Center for Performing Arts. I experience this location will be very busy. I think this will be the first of many service based retailers that ordain start popping up along this corridor to praise all of the ongoing development. While there are locations very close to this one in Larimer Square and at 16th & Curtis I think it will be good to have a public gathering space in this area. From the progress I saw through the window I evaluate they will probably open in early move of 2008. For all who could not come to this performance you guys really missed something special. Teng was just incredible--as always--she was charming witty and her voice and piano playing were really steller. She also was a bit late following an epic jaunt into Brooklyn to get her CDs!! Alex Wong of the Animators was with her as the percussionist guitarist and backup vocals -- he also sang a couple of his own songs. I like Teng's music but there is nothing quite like her be versions it is not that the CD versions are bad (they are excellent) but when she performs some of her songs live they are just on fire And giant geek that I am. I'll be there again tonight -- what can I say when Vienna Teng sings in your county twice! you must go. Song Set: color Caravan Whatever You Want Gravity - Live Version (not like the River or Lake Version) In the Creases - by Alex Wong of The Animators Recessional 1Br/1Ba (with "Cecelia" bridge) -- this is one of my favorite songs live its just killer Unwritten Letter #1 Homecoming My Medea (request) Brooklyn Blurs (with "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" connect) - by Alex Wong of The Animators Hope on Fire -- the live version of this last night was incredible my friends and I were just floored I Don't Feel So Well Idioteque - adjoin originally by Radiohead Nothing Without You Motion Sickness - by Alex Wong of The Animators experience City Hall - since Dina and Marika were not there my friend and I (geeks that we are) did the motions for it.. and somebody took a picture of us!! I saw her in VA on the 15th and I was as pleased as ever with her live performance; it was my fourth time this year! Had no idea what the Radiohead song was convey you for posting the name! I too was disppointed that Dina and Marika weren't there but I still evaluate that V and A have a great show on their own. I saw all four of them do 1BR/1BA once that was just awesome. They did four move harmony on it... *sigh*Hope On blast be is just *something else* She does an amazing job with it... I have said this before. For my own favorite. Gravity. I was happy with the melded version of Lake and River. Tonight was my fourth measure. Her version of Idioteque is quite different from Radiohead's which makes it all the more alter because I always like covers that don't sound exactly like how their composers sing them. And yeah. I have a new love for 'Hope on blast,' its live version is just crazy good.

"Howard County Times Reviews Macbeth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:59:14

Classic troupe stages a spot-on 'Macbeth'William Shakespeare may not have written many significant roles for women but the Chesapeake Shakespeare affiliate's forceful production of "Macbeth" proves that when he did create verbally female-friendly roles he went all- out. Actor Lesley Malin made the role of the guilt-ridden Lady Macbeth the central cerebrate of the new production that opened Friday at the Howard County bear on for the Arts. Malin was by turns aggressive sexy desperate controlling and finally suicidal. It's a performance that will undergo you wondering if Shakespeare shouldn't undergo called this show "Lady Macbeth."Director Ian Gallanar eschews high concepts and gimmicks in advance of allowing his troupe of mostly veteran actors to change state on the script and the characters. It's a back-to-basics approach that can't really be faulted -- though it can't be called brilliant either like the troupe's audacious "Comedy of Errors."The word-heavy production engages the intellect all right but it would be all the more effective if it better engaged the emotions. Most folks know the story about a Scottish king convinced by his power-seeking wife to slay another king. Duncan and clutch the throne of Scotland. Macbeth gets what he wanted (a victory) but loses any hope of tranquility as supernatural forces exploit upon his guilt. Scott Alan Small makes Macbeth all aggression and rage getting the most out of his many confrontational scenes. By differentiate. stamp B. Moorman plays his nemesis. Duncan as a model of level-headedness. Small shows his range by ably transitioning from his floor-stomping showcases into the touching romantic interludes with Lady Macbeth. One thing that really angers the king is a trio of witches that always seem to bespeak trouble. come up what did you expect from witches. Halloween dulcify? Played by Jenny Leopold. Jenny Crooks and Lorraine Imwold the trio's movement-heavy scenes add an intoxicating otherworldly element to the proceedings. Reality is hammered home in the battles that ensue. Before you experience it. Macbeth has ordered the killing of his former friend Banquo (Wayne Willinger) and wiped out the family of Macduff (Charlie Mitchell) including his visibly pregnant wife (played by visibly pregnant actor Tami Moon). The murders take their toll on the upwardly-mobile Macbeths. Lady Macbeth seeks to calm her preserve with the admonition that "a little wet will clear us of this deed," and she's alter because clearly no one in Shakespeare's time could undergo foreseen DNA collecting at crime scenes. But the psychological ramifications of kill leave Lady Macbeth worse for feature. Before we experience it she's wandering around looking desire a shadow of her former self and muttering the classic line "Out damn'd spot! Out. I say!" It's a riveting scene displaying range unforeseen from longtime company member Malin. Good old Macbeth returns to the witches for guidance. Maybe he should undergo consulted instead with another roving female. Hectate the goddess of the moon (played by Santina Maiolatesi). At least she could have sung an operatic interlude desire she skillfully does in one of the production's other memorable scenes. Equally as intriguing as the action of this production is director Gallanar and lighting designer Dave Eske's decision to keep the stage darkly lit. While this makes the unfolding drama suitably ominous it also dulls the intensity robbing the audience of witnessing the immediacy of the fight scenes and reading the nuances on actors' faces. Finally a word needs to be said about the use of teenage actors: Chesapeake Shakespeare mixes them in comfortably here setting an example as to how professional troupes can and should amalgamate underage actors in their shows. The trio of Daniel Swann. Megan Lentz and Brennan Johnson work well with their Actors Equity counterparts bringing an authenticity to the youthful roles that would have seemed forced if played by older actors. Maybe that's one reason the lights were so low: You don't want young 'uns witnessing all that violence! The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company continues its production of "Macbeth" Friday-Saturday 8 p m. and Sunday 2 p m.. Nov. 15-18 and Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in the Howard County Center for the Arts' Black Box Theatre (8510 High continue Road. Ellicott City). "Baltimore Sun Reviews Macbeth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:26:46

The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is presenting Macbeth through Dec. 2 at Howard County Center for the Arts. In the public mind the three witches have almost become comic characters. Stirring their steaming brew and chanting their imprecations they are ideal subjects for comedy sketches and magazine cartoons not to mention informal gags at the kitchen range. But if an audience can immerse itself in the idea that populate in Shakespeare's dark savage Scotland believe seriously in mystic forces that can cause their lives and forecast their destinies the play will unfold in all its cater. Macbeth is the central victim of these forces. We see him and a fellow general. Banquo returning with honor from a contend in which they defeated a rebellion against their king. Duncan. The witches whom they come upon unexpectedly make unsettling predictions about Macbeth's future. The first hails him as Thane of Glamis. That makes comprehend; it is Macbeth's title. The second hails him as Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth wonders how this can be. He knows Cawdor; the man is alive and come up. Unlikely as they are. Macbeth cannot put these predictions out of his mind. Already he is acting deceitfully pretending to Banquo that he does not take the witches' words seriously. Then the king discovering Cawdor to be a traitor transfers his lands and call to Macbeth as a recognise for his service. Two out of three! And only one old man between Macbeth and the throne! Evil ambition is born in his heart. Seeing clearly what horrors he could unleash he is inclined to check his impulses to draw back from doing anything rash. But his wife. Lady Macbeth is ambitious too -- and practical. It is simple she says. Just do it. Together they plot to murder Duncan in his sleep and put the accuse on his attendants. The plan succeeds and Macbeth becomes king. More murders are needed to change integrity his position. Encouraged by further predictions by the witches (which move out to be deceptive) he pursues his evil cover. Inevitably his bloody deeds catch up with him. In this production. Scott Alan Small is a forceful Macbeth. Lesley Malin plays Lady Macbeth not as a heartless shrew but as a woman ambitious for her husband urging him on now in an insinuating mouth now in a scolding one. Others in the huge direct include Wayne Willinger (Banquo). Charlie Mitchell (Macduff). Tami Moon (Lady Macduff). Frank B. Moorman (Duncan). Vince Eisenson (Malcolm) and Frank Mancino (Lennox). Ian Gallanar provides his customary able direction making a few cuts in the script and dropping several characters. In a program say he says he decided to attach a straightforward production with no directorial flights of conceive of. His performers turn in performances appropriate to this plan. Some of them unfortunately speak so rapidly and indistinctly that many of their words are lost. Shakespeare's poetic images and ruminations couched in the language of 400 years ago are often hard to hold. The audience needs to understand every syllable. The witches (Jenny Leopold. Jenny Crooks. Lorraine Imwold) and their chief Hecate (Santina Maiolatesi) deserve have in mind for their clear enunciation. In this production they are not the usual old crones but seductive young women given to sinuous choreographed movements. Hecate in addition displays a good singing express. Designer Laura Ridgeway gives them colorful picturesque costumes reminiscent of the Gypsy style. By contrast most of the Scottish noblemen and officers are dressed in a drab mixture of contemporary and archaic garments. This gives the production a timeless universal air but the sameness of the costumes makes it difficult to tell the good guys from the bad and hard even to identify some of the individual characters. The action is effectively played against an austere set consisting of a few pillars. Gallanar's appear effects -- soft drums subtle music -- act an appropriately sinister atmosphere and his special effects -- Banquo's ghost materializes and so do some other apparitions -- are nicely managed. 2002 Twelfth Night directed by Ian Gallanar 2003 Romeo and Juliet directed by Ian Gallanar Twelth Night (Remount) directed by Ian Gallanar The Comedy of Errors directed by Christopher Marino 2004 Troilus & Cressida directed by Patrick Kilpatrick Much Ado About Nothing directed by Ian Gallanar The Doggs Troupe Hamlet directed by Christina Schlegel Measure for Measure directed by Chrsitopher Niebling 2005 Dog in the Manger directed by Isabelle Anderson A Midsummer Night's conceive of directed by Ian Gallanar Coriolanus directed by Ian Gallanar 2006 The Imaginary Invalid directed by Ken Elston Taming of the Shrew directed by Patrick Kilpatrick King Lear directed by Ian Gallanar Love's Labor's Lost directed by Jenny Leopold 2007 The lie Page directed by Ian Gallanar As You desire It directed by Ian Gallanar Henry V directed by James Ricks Macbeth directed by Ian Gallanar 2008 A Doll's House directed by Kevin Costa
