"Johhny Can?t Write" posted by ~Ray

John Hancock wouldn’t accept the handwriting taught in many schools today. And his loopy slanted compose might as come up be a foreign language to 21st century students. Time and technology undergo largely done away with traditional penmanship leaving schools with a challenge that mirrors today’s fast pace: how to inform a cursive call that’s faster to create verbally than older ornate methods and easily readable. Why inform cursive at all when computers and keyboards are so prevalent? For one thing younger children may not undergo the skills to fully learn keyboarding and not all classrooms have computers. "The Homeschool Crux" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:32:16

It's time. I always look forward to the beginning of the school year. After a long pass of hard work. I'm ready to get approve into our routine. School activities cooking and cleaning.. if they aren't scheduled and thought out none of them are done very well. School preparation is at times quite challenging. measure year. I was excited about our new curriculum. It is a computer based curriculum that is both teacher and student friendly. SOS offers videos games slides and many more interactive details to support the different topics being taught and engages students in a variety of learning techniques to support their different learning styles. As wonderful as it is it's not strong in every affect matter. While I loved the bible history and science. I was disappointed with math and language arts. So now. I am changing those 2 areas for this year and undergo been researching many of the curriculums that are available. So how did I experience this curriculum wasn't right for us? My daughter. Savannah asked me a bring together of months ago. "Mom how do you create verbally an in cursive?" She just finished 3rd grade and I knew that b/c of the computer curriculum she didn't get enough writing learn. Same with the math. I now experience that the writing aspect of language arts and math is very important. I don't think our year was lost by using the SOS. With some analyse and repetition we'll get ahead again. But now what?My questions concerning Language Arts are these: Do I want a that is worksheet based and loaded with busy bring home the bacon? Or do I want a that focuses on classical and allocate winning books but doesn't seem to have strong grammatical instruction? Do we want to be strong in grammar or do we want to be well-read? Do I want it to be?I evaluate I undergo math narrowed down to 2 different curriculums. I've heard good things about both is very repetitious offers a strong math locate and is highly recommended by some long time homeschoolers math was recommended by a friend and is published by the same affiliate as our SOS. AOP is a superior educational provider for Christian curriculum so I don't think I could go do by. Now I undergo to decide. My decision for language arts is the hardest one. Many of the literature based curriculums are. I am keeping the SOS program for those so I don't want the added subjects that come with the books. If I go with the worksheet based curriculum for language arts. I don't have a very good literature supplement and those are hard to find. So what to do? I've talked with Travis about this and he says that whatever I go with will be good with him. He is very supportive with our homeschooling the children and has full confidence in my decision of what curriculums to use. But I do need some input from other homeschoolers/teachers or anyone with a evince of wisdom who has been-there-done-that or even wants to just offer some advice. I don't know very many homeschoolers/teachers in our community (we are still fairly new) and I be to alter up my mind. SOON. At least by the end of this week. So pipe up and let me experience what you evaluate. Anyone. Regarding language arts. I will act all comments into consideration. I really don't evaluate I could go wrong either way. Thanks for enduring this BORING affix. Hi Kim,I FEEL your pain! I've been there again & again it seems desire. If it makes you feel any better we use a mixture when it comes to curriculum as well. Not sure if this ordain help or confuse you more but just this year I switched to Singapore Math (available at lovetolearn com) and Abeka for LA. What I construe about Singapore was that after 6 years of it the student can go right into Saxon's Algebra 1. It's a tough curriculum but taught very come up. They have to take a placement test to see what aim they are at before you begin. I used Horizons when my daughter was in Kindergarten and though it wasn't right for us it wasn't a bad curriculum. I have friends who use it and really desire it. I wouldn't advise the Lifepacs from AO though. We struggled through those measure year simply from boredom. For the be of the subjects. I use My Father's World which I am thoroughly enjoying. It seems to bring in the literature part of the LA with the other subjects though desire you mentioned and you aren't looking for the other subjects so I'm not even sure why I brought that up. :) Abeka is very thorough when it comes to Phonics/Language. It is worksheet based but it's fun cram and is only 2 sides per book per day. There is a Language book and a Letters/Sounds schedule. I also use their spelling schedule b/c it ties in. My daughter is not very fond of worksheets but hasn't complained much about these and has been able to act up with the workload with very little issues. After two weeks. I can already see that she's really gaining from this curriculum. I grew up on Abeka and feel desire I received a very thorough education when it came to Phonics. I evaluate they undergo a reading program too but I've never checked that one out. Enough rambling as I am probably confusing.

"teaching, etc." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:01:02

I’m noticing that for the last several posts. I really haven’t written about teaching.  Not really.  The fact is. I’m drained from collaborative meetings.  It turns out that I’m not quite the diplomat that I thought I was.  Today as usual. I got the same excuses  for not doing homework as I do every day.  Again and again.  I finally went *dwell Vermeulen* on them.  (This comes from Halford…Insanity…in my blogroll)  That’s when I get so tired and fed up from being trying to be creative that I simply fasten them in rows and have them construe from the text.  They refuse to interact so it’s a punishment/consequence of sorts.  It’s the curriculum that they are supposed to undergo.  Problem is it doesn’t teach them how to think.  In or out of the box.  Fill in the keep.  Spit it out.  Blah blah blah. After the class a girl was sad with tears even.  I had tears.  She said. “But I like the way you teach.” Maybe I’m just not cut out to inform English.  PE?  Great.  Science?  I’m on top of my bet.  Language Arts?  Reading assessments that I can’t give because the computer room is not create from raw material.  Writing assessments that I undergo been trying to teach.  How do you act to a conjoin of literature and how do you get me to understand that you are connecting with it?We go away our Poetry Hour tomorrow.  I got a lovely email from Taylor Mali (explore him to see *What do Teachers Make* on YouTube) in which he showed me exactly how to do the Poetry Slam. Since I don’t drink there is no option but to go through this.  I wonder if the kids feel as badly as I do tonight? Teaching English is a tough gig. I’m constantly questioning the beat ways to approach things. Sometimes. I can’t evaluate of any other way than the same old mundane way. If your students won’t interact…wow…that’s really tough. If they won’t do homework it’s a sad teaching life of simply spinning wheels–especially if it’s in preparation for the lesson or activity. Oh boy! I comprehend ya! I am curious to hear about your experience with close Poetry. Our department tried Slam in our classrooms with a huge culminating event measure year and we had no idea what we were doing. It was pretty cool though! All of the students enjoyed watching the slam event and we discovered that our most passionate poets were the students we’d never expect to change up to it! BTW. My students really liked Mali’s “Totally Like Whatever,” and I swear they took it to heart!
