"New program added to School of Arts and Communication" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:12:45

The College's School of Art. Media and Music added the department of Communication Studies to its school and was officially renamed the School of Arts and Communication after receiving Board of Trustees approval on Oct. 2 a campus-wide e-mail announced earlier this month. The decision to move the department of Communication Studies formerly located in the School of Culture and Society and to rename the school began around two years ago. Susan Ryan chair of the department of Communication Studies said. Jim Lentini former dean of Art. Media and Music contacted Ryan over the summer about moving the department."That became a very intriguing prospect for our department," Ryan said. "To move the entire department and to have our name in the school seemed like it would also give us greater growth potential.""There was some thought that went into that name," Tara Pavlovsky dean of the library and interim dean of the School of Arts and Communication said regarding the renaming of the School of Arts and Communication. The "communication" part was a request of the department of Communication Studies he said a decision that he supported. "Did I want to have the School of Art. Music. IMM and Communication? No," Pavlovsky said. "But the 'Arts and Communication' to show that there are elements of this field of communication studies that extend well beyond what might be termed the arts. I have no problem with that."The department of Communication Studies' switch to a new school did not warrant any physical location changes."Everything is staying where it is and that was one of the selling points. Nobody wanted to move and obviously many of our facilities are here (in Kendall Hall)," Ryan said. The reshuffling of the department of Communication Studies to a different school does bring together the previously split facilities of Kendall Hall under one school. Pavlovsky said. The performance facilities in Kendall including the main stage and the Don Evans Black Box Theater formerly fell under the jurisdiction of the dean of the former School of Art. Media and Music. Meanwhile the radio station television studios and offices through the department of Communication Studies were under the dean of the School of Culture and Society. Pavlovsky said. Now all these facilities fall under the School of Arts and Communication.

"UA Philharmonic Orchestra" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-19 00:08:55

The University of Arizona Philharmonic Orchestra presents a concert featuringtwo works with "geographic" titles: W. A. Mozart's "Prague Symphony" and"Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius. Also included on the program is EllsworthMilburn's work "Chiaroscuro" (Italian meaning clear/light-dark) which wascommissioned in 1984 by the Houston Symphony Orchestra. The PhilharmonicOrchestra will act under the baton of Charles Bontrager newly-appointedassistant director of orchestral activities and graduate student conductorsEiki Isomura and James Stopher. About Milburn's "Chiaroscuro," Maestro Bontrager comments. "Just as'chiaroscuro' in art often refers to contrasting shadows - lights and darks -so does 'chiaroscuro' in Milburn's sonic creation broach with contrasting shadowsof musical texture. At times it is transparent ethereal delicate tender andconsonant and at times heavy dark brittle ponderous and dissonant. Thepiece is not however an example of what some might consider to be 'in yourface' 20th century modernism. Rather it is like walking through a museum andbeing intrigued mystified and perhaps even nurtured by shapes and colors andtextures which while perhaps not ordinary are not discomforting."Charles Bontrager joined the faculty of The University of Arizona School ofMusic in the fall of 2007 after nearly thirty years as a professional conductorof symphony and opera. Maestro Bontrager held numerous musical positions in theUnited States including the music directorships of orchestras in Ohio,Kentucky. Washington and Missouri along with opera companies in Missouri andArkansas. The University of Arizona Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the large ensemblesvital to the educational and artistic mission of The University of ArizonaSchool of Music. In its ranks are music majors and minors as well as studentsand other members of the UA community. The Philharmonic performs across-section of the orchestral repertoire in four concerts each year. Theensemble is led by graduate student conductors and coached by Nelson RiddleEndowment orchestral assistants under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Cockrell.
