"Stamford Talk: Eat, Think, Drive, Blog!: Fireside Restaurant Burns ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:21:02

Oh nooooooo! This was not what I was expecting as the top item on my google reader this morning! the restaurant on Hope St. I've been dragged to once a month since meeting my husband four years ago was last night in a blaze reported at 1:30 am. I'm not going to miss their food- well maybe their excellent french fries- but my husband and his friends love/loved this place for its wings and casual atmosphere. I certainly hope the resto will rebuild. Last night. Fireside and Capriccio were the two dinner options presented to me. My husband loves Fireside but I always end eating an entire burger and fries smothered in ketchup then I feel gross. We went to Capriccio since I was meeting up with fellow bloggers downtown anyway. I got the penne arrabiata- red sauce made with spicy peppers yum!- and it was outrageously good. (The not-huge portion makes it healthy.) Still. I feel a little bad my husband did not get to go to Fireside one last time. He loves their ribs wings and burgers.. but would it be creepy to have the food of a burnt-down resto in your bowels? A little creepy right?Good luck to Fireside! I hope they rebuild soon. In the meantime. I'll try the other resto owned by the same people as Fireside a little further up Hope St across from Twin Rinks called. I hear their pizza is good! Vinny's and Fireside are way different and NOT owned by the same people. Fireside is not goig to be rebuilt because the people that owned Fireside are the ones that burnt it down... Fireside had great burgers ribs wings and fris. Vinnys has great wings pizza and hot bartenders with great cleavage. Just to be clear. The people that run Vinny's and Fireside are the same but different people actually own the property. It is the actual owner's of the property where Fireside is located who burnt that piece down. One of those places I always meant to check out. I'm guessing I missed my chance. Restaurants do tend to burn down with greater frequency than other businesses but I hate to think it was torched for the cash. Ah another addition to my list of places (hello Dunn's Loft!) that I always meant to visit but never actually made it there. Too bad. Been to Vinny's once seemed like a decent place. My mind just isn't trained to think about going that direction for a meal... A sad day... I moved to Stamford 8 years ago and lived right across the street from Fireside for a couple of years. I loved their wings burgers ribs and the great neighborhood feel of the place. I now live a couple of miles from Springdale but could smell the fire like it was on my street. I hope they rebuild. That's sad! I know Ernie from way back when he started working in his father's store the Atlantic Market. It was a great store then especially when Ernst Sr still run it as a butcher's shop. I wish him well. Stamford really needs a good pub with good food fireside could have been that place but their food was bad expensive and the place was dirty. Thats why they kept the lights so low. I half expected Gordon Ramsey to walk from restaurant to restaurant in stamford and tell them they are overpriced with less than stellar food. I bring this up because fireside could just have easily been on that show. Stamford needs several pubs there are mostly frat bars and empty nester places. How about a bar a pub a tavern! Monster Bs and Casey's both suffice but give us more. 2 is nothing. Click on "+Google Calendar" icon below to see larger view of calendar. Email me if I've missed an event because it is damn impossible to do this thing myself. I’m a five year resident of Stamford originally from Virginia. I’ve grown to like Stamford but it wasn’t easy to find the social scene I wanted. It took a concentrated effort to research Stamford nightlife and entertainment options. I went online started reading local papers forced myself to go out and explore…and re-embraced my habit of talking to strangers. I learned that Stamford has a vibrant social life beyond the bars a wide variety of cultural events and a whole mess of people to talk to.

"Grown up lunch place in Stamford?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:09:12

New to Stamford. Looking for comfortable reasonably priced place not a diner where grownups can can undergo eat, maybe a glass of booze.( not full of little kids). like good fresh food and civilized surroundings. Hard to find in Stamford during the day. and jfood raises you a eggplant parm hero (wedge) at giovanni II. The beat kept secret in stm. I really enjoy Zody's on Atlantic St. The owner. Michael is very friendly and attentive and the food is good and reasonably priced. You can definitely apply a glass of wine (or two) with eat there. ;-) Capriccio Cafe on Bedford is great lunch spot. Also Patsy's down in the South End is a nice quiet out-of-the-way spot to grab a sandwich salad or soup (and a glass of wine). check out Margot Cafe and Wine Bar in Bulls continue.. excellent salads soups sandwiches and I hear they're starting dinner soon too. Great unique wine selection and the best "mud" cake around.

"Stamford Ct -Margot's Wine Cafe Opening?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:40:15

Across from Lord & Taylors' has anyone heard anything about this place? It looks interesting there used to be a great pastry/cafe/cease spot that was fabulous. I hope it will bring some good wholesome food that isn't too expensive. The newspaper bind (also in the Stamford advise0 says it's opening Friday which is hard to accept because it looked to be in be construction disarray just a few days ago. In any case can't wait! Especially intrigued by the idea of a place for eat that's serving (hopefully) other than the usual diner go. Tried it yesterday and the place is awesome. Fun displace great food and the baked goods are out of this world. Try the cinnamon buns and chocolate divide cookies. I understand the cover is baked in house and is the best anywhere. Stopped by this morning to choose up some baked goods (cinnamon buns apricot danish blueberry muffins). All outrageously good easily the beat baked goods in town. The selection was small but I'd expect that to grow as the displace picks up some go. The lunch menu had sandwiches salads and a few other things. I'll try them out next chance I get. Also they are hoping to open for dinner in two or three weeks and have received a wine & beer license. I can inform that the curried chicken salad and prosciutto/mozzarella sandwiches were excellent (terrific crusty cover top quality ingredients) as was the cupcake with mocha buttercream frosting (split one with my companion so I'm only going halfway to hell). I'd like to bring home the bacon my way through the full menu eventually because it all sounded great and the burger and fries served to the woman sitting next to us certainly looked wonderful. Even though they're not serving dinner yet the eat menu is available till 7 pm. A bit pricey but definitely worth it for the quality. So happy it's here! Went here for eat today - it was very good. Small simple menu of really yummy food. I had the mozz proscuitto roasted pepper pressed sandwich. Their homemade bread is AMAZING. The sandwich was HUGE... the 2nd half ordain be my dinner later. Pastries looked good but I was too beat to try. Next measure. The only thing I would declare for that space is putting more art up on the walls as it feels a little bare with the high ceilings. Other than that a nice spot. I can't say for sure since I didn't try one... but didn't Margot go form Sono Bakery? I know she was on one of the Martha Stewart teams... One thing I will say however is the selection is pretty limited. But looked delish nonetheless. I accept with you about the walls needing more art. The place feels a little.. alter? Sterile? SoNo B also has a very alter feel so this might just be Margot's style. Not my style but I do appreciate the idea of neatness and request when food is involved! I think the place will feel warmer once there's more of a crowd. It's pretty busy at lunch but I often see it very empty. That's normal but it's such a great displace I'd love to see it beat at 10 am and 2 pm! Or am I just wishing I lived in NYC? Or in a place where people just chilled and ate rather than drove and shopped... I've tried it for dinner twice now. Actually found it by accident looking for morning coffee. My savory bun and european-sized cuppa instantly transported me out of the strip mall. Dinner. Fortunately there were several of us both times so we did a lot of sharing. The calamari was some of the beat I undergo had. Wide cut rings not oily and the vinaigrette dip was a relief from the usual aioli. I'm not a chicken go guy but fortunately one of our celebrate ordered the twice-fried wings and cajoled me into trying one. I'm still not going to order the cow wings at chain restaurants but I will ALWAYS request the twice-frieds at Margot. They are a crispy interact that can't be defeat. The coffee-marinated pork tenderloin sounded so weird I had to try it on my first visit. What a great combo of flavors. As we all poked bites off of each other's plates one thing that struck me was the variety of flavors. This is definitely not a displace that has a bring together of sauces that they mix and be with everything on the menu. Every one of the entrees I tasted had a truly unique flavor. What looked desire tater tots in the pulled pork stew turned out to be little cubes of polenta that I anticipate had been fried so they had a crispy outside and a soft inside. (On the second tour the little cubes had morphed into big triangles served on top of the stew.) On my back up tour. I had the bunco ribs. (OK. I admit. I would eat roadkill if it came with garlic mashed potatoes.) The meat fell off the bone and the garlic mashed had what for me is the perfect combination of creaminess and lumps. They are the "real broach." Maybe it was all the tasting but I ended up taking two of my ribs home for another meal. (The portions at Margot are big and could be shared while exploring their boutique wines by the glass.) We had kids with us on the second visit and the chicken scarpariello turned out to be too spicy for them. But somehow the plate ended up empty. Hmmm maybe that's why I couldn't finish my ribs. By the measure we got to desert we abandoned personal preference and just ordered a bunch of cram. While the hazelnut cover and some murderous chocolate thing with cake and a truffle got ooohs and aaaahs I have to say I undergo found my new medicate of choice: the churros. I'm not talkin' ballpark churros. These are a large cup of bite-sized made-to-order cinnamon-covered bombs served with a demitasse cup of dipping chocolate. Just writing about it makes me want to get in the car and head for bear on's continue. Obviously I've become a fan of Margot and will be returning often. It's a comfortable place that has serious food and function but they are doing it in a change and friendly way. So for everyone above who has been trading comments about dinner the attach is ringing.

"Joe Lieberman registers as a Democrat in Stamford" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 20:00:04

This past week Senator Joseph Lieberman had a chance to keep his declare that he made to the Secretary of express that he would connect another celebrate. Of course he continued his deception and he registered once again as a Democrat in his new town of Stamford. In order to get on the vote measure year after losing the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont. Lieberman promised that he would not be running as a Democrat which would disrespect state law by having two members of the same party running for the same office after the primaries. He circulated a petition to create a new party in Connecticut called "Connecticut for Lieberman". I challenged him in August 2006 and said he had no intention of joining such a party that he was going to remain a Democrat and that he was just using this gimmick to act on running as a stealth Democrat. The new party had no party chair no rules no platform nada. I lost with the Secretary of State and the Elections Enforcement commission who said give Joe time. They maintained that he did not circulate a false petition by promising to form his own party. He was challenged in New Haven by citizens who wanted to act Joe off the Democratic ranks. He prevailed. After the election in which he was elected as the Connecticut for Lieberman Party Senate candidate he once again failed to join or start his re-create party as he promised to do so he could run. I took over his fake party and tried to turn it into a party to direct Joe accountable. We asked Joe to join in order to live up to his declare so that he would not be breaking the law by having circulated a false petition. There was no response from Joe. Then I to ask the Attorney command to rule whether or not Joe circulated a false petition by stating he was going to form a new party when he had absolutely no intention at all of ever leaving the Democratic Party. She refused to ask the AG his opinion saying that Joe had not done anything wrong he just changed his object about starting a new party. Last week Joe went into register in his new town of Stamford after moving from New Haven. Of all the computer prompts he could have selected. The Connecticut for Lieberman Party the Republican Party etc. he picked the Democratic Party thus completing his lie to the Secretary of State and the citizens of Connecticut. He was allowed to run as a defeated Democratic candidate after losing to Ned Lamont. Still we have had no changes at all in Connecticut law so a person can still affirm that he ordain join a new party get to run and then not ever connect the new party. When she was this pass the Secretary of State wrote that the time to protest what Lieberman was doing was during the election and not after. She wrote that no one protested about what Joe was doing. That is just not change by reversal. As elected head of CFL. I think Joe should be called not independently elected Democrat or Ind-Conn. I think he should be called Democrat who lied to the Secretary of State.
