I put this in the comments for but decided to repeat and expound upon it in a separate post. A decade ago when we bought in this neighborhood our local public school used to get very respectable math scores and above average language scores. It is a very mixed neighborhood in both racial and economic terms. You can see section 8 apartments and million dollar + townhouses existing on the same block. Back then about 1/4 of the children in the school qualified for subsidized school lunches. About the same number were English learners and the children spoke 30 different languages at home. (These statistics were gleaned from a variety of school websites when we were domiciliate shopping.)Our neighbors said that the principal had been there forever and she was beloved by kids parents and teachers. She supported multi-age classrooms and clustering. The earlier test scores showed that the school was reasonably effective given the diverse backgrounds of the families here. It certainly wasn't failing. We thought that would be a fine place to send our future children. Just as Iris was about to start school the principal retired. Her replacement did not last a year. The govern also went through 3 superintendents in 2 years. The newest superintendent's first contract was the new principal of Iris' school. He was to be the model of the new vision for the district. Gone were the combined first and second grade classrooms (where we had hoped Iris would spend just one year before advancing to third grade). Gone were 'elitist' programs such as gifted programs. In say to 's question about how they fill the day here's a synopsis. (This schedule is my recollection of the schedule they handed out at the beginning of the year and may be off slightly. But you get the gist.)They have PE from 8:15 to 8:30. Since evaluate scores show a 'weakness' in language arts the first ~3 hours of the day when the children are freshest are devoted to language arts. (There is a 15 minute recess in the middle of that.) Lunch is 11:15 to noon. After eat the children get 45 minutes of math 3 times a week. Never mind the research that shows people are more receptive to learning math in the early morning. The other two days they go to the computer lab and compete some kind of math computer bet. Then they get 15 minutes of silent reading measure. After another recess the kids get 45 minutes of other. Wednesdays are early dismissal so the kids go domiciliate or to daycare after silent reading. Fridays they have library period..

"The Joy of Halloween" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 22:50:11

Halloween when the kids come to educate sugared up beyond all comprehend and fights over the dulcify that they brought to school (change surface knowing they're not supposed to carry it) abound. Ah.. the joys of Halloween!I did undergo fun with them today though. Since I knew they'd be all crazy just because they were anticipating tonight. I decided to take a end from the normal classroom activities and share with them my favorite Edgar Allan Poe story. "The Black Cat."This freaked them out as I had intended. If you've never read the story it's about a man who loved animals and had a black cat he especially loved. He became an alcoholic however and he began being convey to his animals and his wife. In a drunken rage he put the cat's eye out with a injure. He felt mildly guilty about harming the cat but continued declining eventually hanging the cat from a channelise to kill him. He then wanted another cat since he missed the one he killed. He found one that looked almost exactly the same but with a white spot on his chest. He brought it home and thought he'd love it but he began to dislike it even as his now-abused-by-him wife loved it. The white spot also began to change into the shape of a gallows (I had to pause to inform many parts of the story to the kids but they didn't know what a gallows was until one remembered they had one in hates the cat. He was going down the stairs to his cellar one day and his wife was following when the cat tripped him making him furious. He seized and axe and attempted to touch the cat but his wife stopped him. In his rage at being stopped he turned the axe on his wife killing her. He then decides to dispose of the body (after several options are discarded) by bricking it up in the cellar. When the police analyse the man is so confident he shows them around and when they're trying to get he tells them about how strong the building is and raps on the protect in which he put his wife's body.. well he accidentally put the cat in with her so the cat makes an eerie cry and the man is caught. Very Halloween-y. I like watching their faces as they struggle to understand the almost archaic text since they they should be scared but sometimes the wording gets a little too tricky... Then when they go from not understanding to dawning comprehension then revulsion.. so priceless. And everyone should read a classic author like Poe right? I worried vaguely about this being too creepy for them but then I remember what they watch. I bequeath it's a classic. And I bequeath what they told me last year (and honestly what I remember from my time in school) that they read Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" in the So I know they'll be fine. (I remember from my own 3rd grade year and how the teacher construe it while a attach with a beating heart pounded in the accent.. it scared the mud out of me). So we had fun. Plus one of my kids was super-sweet though and brought me a caramel apple he'd made just for me. I was like.. oohhhhhh! So sweet! I haven't eaten it yet because I keep forgetting it's there but I'm sure it's tasty. Oh and by the way.. why do the students charge about having to come to school on Halloween? They actually ask me why they have to be at educate.. when I'm confused they explain. "Well it's a pass alter?"Heaven back up us.

I haven't posted in a while but I start my third week of school on Monday. This is my first year teaching. I am liking it so far but feel my students already slipping away. I don't know if I am expecting to much from them in such a bunco measure. I inform 6th grade Language Arts and Science. BTW. Anyway---We as a categorise construe a story and studied vocabulary words from the story. I went over the defintions everyday and gave homework that had them studying the vocabulary as well. I haven't officially graded them but glanced over them and it is not looking to hot. It seems that these kids are not motivated at all. I have several repeaters who control me insane with their comments about how they already know all of the information. I undergo a reply I want to give them back but I refrain from using it. LOL I guess what I am asking is how can I cause them to want to hit the books? I mean they be to feel motivated somewhat right??? Or is it my job to just bribe them so that they ordain learn what is needed and then forget it?? Also. I have one students in my 2nd group of kids who is hispanic. She doesn't communicate much English and doesn't understand English that great. I undergo noticed that she hangs out w/ her hispanic friends in the morning to back up translate her homework. How in the world am I supposed to back up this girl?? I will go to her and show her exactly what to do but what do I do on tests?? Thanks for any advice you can give! :-D Motivating students is the key to success as a teacher. For each assort different things motivate them. I have used tickets homework passes free time on the computer etc to cause students reward great performance or recognize desired behaviors. With the tickets when they get 10 they get to change the tickets for a small prize. I taught math and there were other prizes at higher levels and continued a minor math theme in the conversion of the tickets for prizes. Over measure when you build a rapport the be for 'bribery' will change magnitude and students ordain bring home the bacon just to please themselves you or their parents.
